On Tuesday we discussed how we are entering the special time of Lent, a very special and important time where we prepare for Easter and remember all the sacrifices Jesus made for us.  We thought about how Jesus made special choices for us, so Lent is a time where we make choices to help ourselves or others – these are called Lenten Promises. Some people choose to give something up for Lent that they really like, such as chocolate or sweets. Some people promise to do something extra, such as help Mums and Dads at home with the chores.

We all thought about what Lenten promise we wanted to make, and wrote them down in preparation for Father Philip to bless them at our Ash Wednesday service at St James’s Church. At the service, two children from every class bought the envelope with their classes Lenten Promises inside to the Altar. Father Philip then blessed all the promises with Holy Water. We also saw Father bless the ashes with Holy Water, the ashes are made from the blessed palm leaves from Palm Sunday.

Every member of our school Family received a cross on our foreheads with this special blessed ash, and were told “Remember you belong to Jesus”.

After this very special service, Nursery were able to decorate their Lenten Promises, taking extra care of them now they have been blessed. The promises will take pride of place in our Religious Education display board, to acknowledge the special promises we have made, their special message to ourselves and God now that they have been blessed and to remind us of our promises throughout the period of Lent.
