In Nursery we focus on the importance of building fine motor skills, in preparation for writing in Reception.

Fine motor skills involve small muscles working with the brain and nervous system to control movements in areas such as the hands, fingers, lips, tongue and eyes. Developing fine motor skills helps children do things like eating, writing, manipulating objects and getting dressed.

We practice and strengthen our fine motor skills through many fun and creative activities! The main activities we have been focusing on this week also incorporated our maths skills. Using Numicon as a fine motor activity, means that as the children are pinching and pushing counters into the Numicon to count, they are also strengthening the muscles in their hands. Additionally, we have been creating our own patterns by pinching and pushing pegs into peg boards! The children have loved using the different coloured pegs to create their own patterns.
