This week, Reception enjoyed their very first P.E. lesson of the year, where we began our new topic, gymnastics. In this lesson we focused on copying and creating shapes with our bodies.
We began with a warm up, imagining that the hall had turned into a rainforest. The children travelled through the rainforest in lots of different ways such as walking, jumping, skipping and jogging. It was lots of fun to try and move carefully around the space as rainforest music played in the background.
We then looked at some animals that live in rainforests, such as crabs, scorpions and caterpillars, and had a go at copying their movements as we explored the hall like rainforest creatures.
Next, we learnt some of the key gymnastics shapes: straight, straddle, tuck and star. The children worked hard to hold each shape for 10 seconds, concentrating on keeping their arms, legs, fingers and feet really straight. Everyone had a go at jumping off the gymnastics block and trying to make a straight shape in the air.
To finish, we became rainforest frogs and practiced jumping over a cone in different directions: forwards, backwards and side to side.
It was a brilliant way to end our second week together.
What a fantastic start to P.E. in Reception!
