In our Religious Education lessons this week, we have been thinking about our new topic of the Eucharist and started by exploring the importance of gathering.

We discussed the importance of gathering together at Church and how each person brings something unique to the group. We discussed this through the story of the Stone Soup. The children were able to identify that if we all bring the small amount we have to a group and share it then each of us will have more in return. Just like the villagers in the story.

We thought about the different stages in the Sacrament of the Eucharist. Beginning with the gathering and the welcome from the priest, the Liturgy of the Word and the preparation of the gifts.  We thought about the different things we might see during Eucharist and the children identified the importance of the chalice and the bread. We thought about the importance of the words the priest says during the preparation:

“When supper was ended, he took the cup. Again, he gave you thanks and praise, gave the cup to his disciples and said:

Take this all of you and drink from it: this is the cup of my blood, the blood of new and everlasting covenant.”

We discussed the importance of sharing this gift during Eucharist and linked it to the story of the Stone Soup.

We then spent time designing our own pieces of artwork around the chalice and the bread.
