This week in our Religious Education lessons Year 3 have been learning about the importance of commitment and promises during the Sacrament of Baptism. When asked to explain the Sacrament of Baptism the children are able to give detailed answers using a range of Religious Vocabulary.

Sebastian: “The Sacrament of Baptism is a celebration when a baby is welcomed into God’s family. The parents and godparents renew their faith and make a promise to the baby. They commit to guide the baby to live in God’s way”

To help us understand the Sacrament, the children lead a role-play session. They named all the special items we would need and used the classroom environment to try to represent these. The children were great at understanding the different symbols of Baptism.

Gabrielle: “We need a white garment to symbolise the baby putting on a new life in the life of the church.”

Camila: “The candle is a symbol of passing on the Light of Christ to the baby.”

When looking at the renewal of faith for the parents and godparents, Year 3 picked different words that they thought were important and why.

Julia: “The words ‘I do’ are important because they show that they are making a commitment to God again. They sound a lot like when people are getting married because that is a commitment too.”

The children have been so enthusiastic when learning in our new topic. They have been able to make links between the Sacrament of Baptism and the story of Jesus’ Baptism.
