This half term in Art, we have been studying Roman mosaic art and exploring how the Roman’s created these impressive art pieces all made out of lots of tiny squares to create a pattern. We found out that tessellation is creating a repeated pattern within a design and we looked at some examples of Roman mosaics in which some are still standing today.

We then started to create our own mosaic art which involved drawing a repeated pattern on a small piece of paper and then thinking how could we ensure that the pattern was repeated. We then had to think about contrasting colours for our backgrounds so that our designs would stand out. This all involved getting strips of coloured card, cutting them into small squares and sticking them onto our paper to create our designs. As you can imagine it was very time consuming but it was worth it as our art pieces came out so impressive.

Year 4, what did you enjoy about our art lessons and what design would you do next?
