In science, we have been learning about animals, including humans, and their survival needs. We have been learning about the importance of exercise, eating the right amounts of different types of food, and hygiene for humans.

To investigate hygiene further, we looked into what we need to wash our hands most successfully. To do this, Miss Carruthers put glue and glitter on our hands to see which components or combinations of factors led to the most clean hands. The glitter was a way of representing germs!

There were four of us taking part in our experiment but we had to keep a few things the same so that it was a fair test. One of us had to wash our hands with just cold water and no soap, another one of us did it with just warm water. Another one of us used cold water and soap, and the final person used warm water and soap. We each had twenty seconds to wash our hands and we then observed what had happened. We noticed that the person that had warm water and soap had the cleanest hands at the end of the experiment. This reminds us of the best way to wash our hands, with warm water and soap. We know that soap helps to remove dirt so we were not surprised that using soap did make a difference to our experiment!

Can you explain why warm water is important when washing your hands?
