In Science this week, Year 3 have offered Miss Drury some brilliant advice about caring for her plants. They worked scientifically by observing the plant and sharing their ideas and questions about what they had noticed!

“Where do you keep your plant at home?”

“It needs to be where there is lots of light”

“The plant feels wet in some places but dry in others”

“Do you water your plant too much?”

“Maybe it need more water if it’s dry?”

“The leaves are very brown, maybe it needs more sunlight”

“Some of the plant is dead, maybe you need to cut those bits off”

Children could quickly identify the important things the plant need in order to survive! They decided that the most important things were:

Water

Space

Air

Nutrients

Light

We discussed which one we thought was the most important and how we could try to find out. As a class, we planned an experiment where the children decided we would grow 5 plants in the exact same way but we would change one thing in each… the things they need to survive! Then children will check on how they grow throughout the week.

Children created a list of things they would need and even made predictions about which ones they thought would grow the most.

They even started to become familiar with key scientific vocabulary such as fair test and variables!

I cannot wait to carry out our experiment next week!
