On Friday Year 1 took part in a very exciting science experiment relating to our topic Animals including Humans!

For the first part of this topic we have been learning all about humans, our bodies and our senses. The children identified that we have five senses: sight, taste, touch, smell and hearing.

We decided to put our senses to the test by conducting an exciting experiment which would test the use of our different senses. We created a carousel activity where the children would move from sense to sense and experiment different activities which will use each of their senses.

At our tasting table we tried lemons, oranges and biscuits. The children loved tasting these delicious foods however lots of children found the lemon very sour! It was super funny to watch each others faces as we tasted the lemons.

At our touch table we felt wet sponges in water and washing up liquid. The children found the sponge so squishy and loved the bubbles they created. We also felt jelly! This was really funny and the children found it so slimy, many of us struggled to not eat the jelly.

At our hearing table we played instruments and listened to the noises they created. The children described the different sounds they could create really well. Some children even created patterns when playing their instruments as they realised working together made the music they created sound better.

For our smelling table we smelt some minty toothpaste and some coffee. Some children loved the smell of the coffee, others said they understood why it’s an adult drink!

We worked together as a class for sight. We watched an amazing video of different sea creatures. The children loved this and called out what they could see.

Overall, this was a super exciting afternoon which the children loved. We are so confident with this area of our science topic now which is brilliant to see. Well done Year 1 for all of your amazing hard work.
