This half term in Year 2, we have been focusing on handball as part of our team-building unit, alongside developing our gymnastics skills in a separate session. In today’s team-building lesson, the children concentrated on applying their handball skills in a game situation.

We began with a fun Simon Says warm-up, where the children practised a range of movements such as high knees, star jumps and jogging on the spot. This helped to get their bodies warmed up and ready for the lesson ahead.

The class was then split into teams, and within each team the children organised themselves into defenders and attackers. They followed a set of clear rules to support fair play and teamwork: they were not allowed to touch their opponents, they could only take up to three steps when in possession of the ball, and each team had to complete five passes before attempting to score a goal. The children showed great teamwork, communication and growing confidence in applying these rules during play.

At the same time, the other two teams took part in a piggy in the middle activity, which focused on developing their throwing, passing and concentration skills. This allowed all children to practise key handball skills in a fun and engaging way.
