This week, Year 1 had a very exciting launch to our new topic, Toys!

The children were invited to bring in one of their favourite toys from home to share with their friends. We had a wonderful variety of toys, and the children thoroughly enjoyed showing them to one another and explaining why they were so special!

We were also very lucky to have a special visit from Miss C, who brought in her childhood teddy bear, John, who is over 60 years old! Miss C shared some lovely memories of playing with John as a child, as well as other toys she enjoyed, including hula hoops, dolls and prams. The children were fascinated to hear about what playtime was like in the past and had the opportunity to ask Miss C lots of thoughtful questions about her childhood toys.

We then explored how toys have changed over time, comparing toys from the past with those we play with today. We discovered that many toys in the past were made from wood, metal or fabric, whereas lots of modern toys are made from plastic. We also learnt that toys in the past were often moved by hand or wound up, while many toys today use batteries or electricity to move, light up or make sounds!

The children put their new knowledge to the test by sorting pictures of toys into two groups: toys from the past and toys from the present. As an extra challenge, they explained the differences between the toys, thinking carefully about the materials they were made from and how children played with them.

Of course, we couldn’t launch our Toys topic without having some time to play! The children had a wonderful time exploring the different toys and sharing them with their friends.

What a fantastic start to our new topic! We are very excited to continue discovering how toys and playtime have changed over the years. Well done, Year 1!
