This week in Reception, we had an exciting launch for our brand new topic, ‘Traditional Tales’, and what a fantastic start we’ve had!

On Monday, the children returned to school dressed as their favourite traditional tale characters. It was wonderful to see so many creative costumes, and the children loved talking about who they were dressed as. This led perfectly into our introduction to our focus story for the next two weeks, ‘The Gingerbread Man’, which the class thoroughly enjoyed reading together (especially joining in with the Gingerbread Man’s cheeky rhyme).

As part of our learning, we also created some beautiful artwork for our new classroom display. The children drew characters from the traditional tales we will be exploring this half term, including Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, The Gingerbread Man, and The Enormous Turnip. We were so impressed with their creativity and attention to detail! The drawings will take pride of place in our classroom.

On Wednesday, we had an exciting oracy lesson where the children designed and decorated their own gingerbread men using colouring pencils, googly eyes, and gems. This creative activity helped to inspire ideas and language ready for our writing the following day. There were lots of wonderful discussions about the story and ideas used to describe the Gingerbread Man.

On Thursday, the children used their creations to write imaginative sentences describing their Gingerbread Men. We were so proud of their efforts! Their sentences included ideas such as “The Gingerbread Man is fast,” “He has cherry buttons,” and “He ran away from the little old lady”. There were lots of creative and thoughtful ideas linked to the story.

Throughout the week, the children also enjoyed taking part in a range of hands on activities in our classroom during their independent learning, including making and decorating gingerbread men using playdough, beads, and gems, as well as drawing scenes from The Gingerbread Man. .

It has been a fun filled and exciting first week back, and we are looking forward to continuing our learning with our Traditional Tales topic over the next half term!
