Year 4 have had a brilliant first few days back at school! We have been so busy learning more about ourselves and the world during our Citizenship and Locality days.

We explored ‘My Place in the World’.

On Thursday we reflected on the Convention on the Rights of the Child. We learn that these are special rules governments must follow to keep ALL children safe and healthy. We discussed which rights we thought were most important to us at school and chose 6 to form our Class Charter.

These 6 rights we chose were:

1. Access to education

2. Best interests for the child

3. Respect for children’s views

4. Children with disabilities

5. No discrimination

6. Rest, play, culture and arts

We then agreed on what both children and adults will do to help keep our class a safe, happy and engaging place to learn for everybody.

The class then enjoyed getting to know one another and their new class mates by playing a bingo game to see if anyone in our class could speak another language or even had a pet hamster!

After, we drew self-portraits as a marker of our commitment to the class charter and decorated them beautifully.

On Friday we spent the morning learning all about laws and rules. We thought carefully about what laws are, why they are important and who makes law.

We enjoyed watching videos which told us all about the Houses of Commons and Lords who make up our country’s government. Our government is called a democracy and Year 4 thought this was a fantastic way to rule the country so that everyone could have a say about the new laws they wanted to introduce.

To practice being ‘democratic’ the children wrote letters about why they wanted to become a member of School Council, Green Team or a Class Monitor.

We then elected our the most suitable candidate for our School Council!

In the afternoon the class enjoyed learning about maps.

We looked at a map of Marylebone and were able to spot some familiar and special places such as:

Our school, St. James’s Church, Marylebone High Street and Paddington Street Gardens.

We learnt that maps use symbols which are little images to represent what certain buildings are such as a H for Hospitals and a trolley for shops.

We then made our own map of our school’s local area and added symbols to show the special places around St. Vincent’s.

Welcome to Year 4 everyone! I am really excited for the year ahead.

What did you most enjoy about our first two days back at school?

Mr. Kersys 🙂

One comment on “Welcome Year 4!

  1. Dear Mr. Kersys,

I enjoyed making our little people for the Class Charter because I really liked drawing them. It was very nice to make the map of Marylebone, especially the drawing of the different symbols.

    Greetings,
    Sophia
