We have had the busiest week ever!

Today, we went to visit Crockbridge Farm which is in Surrey. We went here as part of the Schools to Market project. We have previously done a Marketing Masterclass and Green Team have learned how to make chutney, today though, we went to go and pick our own crops! After our very comfortable journey, we arrived at the beautiful farm. We saw a sign that told us all about which fruits and vegetables were available or coming soon. We were told that rhubarb and strawberries were best for us to pick because they are in season at the moment. We split into two groups to tackle the fruits, some were in the rhubarb team and the rest were with the strawberries.

For the rhubarb, we had to find the stalks which were pink or red in colour and aim to pick those ones. We also looked for ones which weren’t too thin, or overripe. We worked so well with our friends and ran back towards the front of the field withΒ huge bunches. We handed these to one of our amazing parent helpers who helped us pick off some of the leaves so that we could get more in our bags… forgetting that we were paying for the weight, not just the bag! For the strawberries, we looked for those that were a beautiful red colour and a nice size. We had four punnets to fill but we could be quite picky with what we chose, as we want our fruits to be the very best!

We have decided that we will make a type of jam next week during our Creativity Afternoon with the parents, as we didn’t pick any vegetables for a chutney! Either way, we know that Green Team will help us out as they’re the experts now. We will also be coming up with a class name for our product and the KS2 Green Team will then be selling it in a few weeks time at Whole Foods! We are so excited to see how it turns out, and can’t wait to try it.

We would like to say a huge thank you to the parents that came along with us to help, they were amazing! We would also like to thank the Schools to Market project who allowed us to go on this trip and helped to pay for our fruit. We had such a fantastic day and it was brilliant to be able to understand a little bit more about farming and understanding where our food comes from.

This was a really good trip. I loved seeing how Rhubarb’s grow? There were different kinds of fruits and vegetables growing on the farm such as rasberries, carrots, broad beans, blackcurrants, beetroots and more.
I think being a farmer is a hardworking life, but the job is fun. It is because of the farmers we get to eat different types of fruits and vegetables which are nutritious for us and yummy too! πŸ˜‹
Thank you to my teachers and my school for organising this great trip.

I loved the fruit picking farm a lot. I was on the strawberry team and I learnt how to pick strawberries properly.
Sadly, we found a dead field mouse (maybe it ate too many strawberries).
Thank you to my teachers for such a fun day!πŸ“
