Today Year 3 had the pleasure of visiting the Roald Dahl Museum and Storytelling Centre in Great Missenden.

Thankfully it was a warm and sunny day for our trip. We first walked to Marylebone train station to catch the train into Buckinghamshire and made our way to the museum. Once we got there, we were met by the lovely Helen who showed us around the museum.

After we had settled in, we went on a village trail around Great Missenden. Great Missenden was where Roald Dahl lived for over 30 years. Many of the buildings around the village high street inspired some of Dahl’s most famous stories. We saw the library that inspired Matilda’s love of reading in Matilda, Crown House that inspired Sophie’s orphanage in the BFG and the Red Pump Garage that inspired Danny Champion of the World.

Year 3 also had the privilege of visiting Roald Dahl’s grave in the churchyard which is where he was buried after passing away in 1990. Today Roald Dahl remains one of the world’s most beloved children’s authors and his legacy continues to live on through his stories and poetry.

After a much needed lunch break, we began our story telling session with the lovely Helen at the museum. First there was a carousel of 4 activities including the ideas table where we could create our own characters just like Dahl did, the dressing up corner, the animation station where we could create our own stop motion animation and the automatic grammatizator which gave us some prompts for our own plots. During these activities we wrote down any ideas that came to mind based on what we saw, heard or thought of, just like Roald Dahl. These were then presented to us in our own ideas book at the end of the session!

In the museum we also saw many of the most important artefacts from Dahl’s life such as his medals from the war, his writing chair, his ideas books and art he had done himself. There were so many facts and pictures of Dahl’s life from his childhood right to his final years.

We learnt so much about Roald Dahl and the inspirations behind the stories we love and treasure. It was especially interesting to find out more about the BFG which we have been reading this term. Mr. Kersys especially loved the chocolate wall that really smelt like Willy Wonka’s delicious chocolate!

Thank you to the museum and Helen for having us, the SVPA for funding our trip and all of the parent volunteers who accompanied us to Great Missenden!
