This week, Year 4 carried out an exciting investigation to explore how different substances can affect our teeth.

We used eggshell as a model for tooth enamel, as both contain calcium. The children placed pieces of eggshell into a range of different liquids, including acidic and alkaline substances, and made predictions about what they thought would happen.

Over the course of our investigation, we observed the eggshells carefully and looked for changes such as softening, discolouration and damage. We discussed what our results might tell us about the effect that different substances can have on our teeth and why it is important to look after our enamel.

The children particularly enjoyed making predictions, comparing their results and thinking like real scientists! They also learnt that not all substances affect our teeth in the same way, and that limiting our exposure to acidic foods and drinks is one way we can help protect our tooth enamel.

Science at home:
Why not ask your child to become a scientist at home? They could look at the food and drink labels in your kitchen and investigate which foods and drinks are acidic. Can they sort them into groups and explain which choices might be kinder to our teeth? They could even create a simple “Tooth-Friendly Choices” poster to share what they have learnt!
