It was Year 4’s turn to visit the Floating Classroom for a special ‘Animal Kingdom’ workshop as part of our Living Things & Their Habitats topic in Science.

We travelled by bus to the canal at Paddington where our classroom for the day awaited us. We were welcomed onto the barge by Flora and Zoe who were going to be our experts for the day. To begin we went through some safety rules before playing some get to you games to introduce ourselves.

We then set off down the canal with our first activity being to try and spot different birds on the canal by using our classification sheet to help us. We got to go out on the deck to see a small island which was home to a lot of the birds on our charts. We even managed to see some herons but we had to make sure we were quiet so that we didn’t scare them away.

After a quick snack break, we were then asked tasked to work out if we could classify an animal by what they eat, correctly identify the animals and sort them into some groups. We worked out that there were carnivores (eats meat), herbivores (eats plants) and omnivores (eats both). We had to be quick at putting the animals into the right categories. We also got to play a fun game in that we had to work out what animals were the predator, prey and producers within a food chain and had to act out a freeze frame of that food chain.

After lunch, we got to go through the famous Madia Hill tunnel on the barge which is just over 250m long. Only 1 canal boat can travel through at any time. Even better that we got to go out on deck and see the tunnel up close and look at the stunning features. It took nearly 5 minutes to go through! After passing through the tunnel, the boat moored at a local park and we got to have a run around and play some games with our friends as well as take a group photo!

Our final activity was to play a guess who classification game in which we had to work in teams to try and guess what animal the other team were thinking of. We had to ask questions such as “Is it warm or cold blooded? Does it have smooth or scaly skin?” We then said goodbye and made our way back to school!

Thank you to everyone on the Floating Classroom for such a wonderful experience and providing lots of learning opportunities. Thank you to the parents who accompanied us on the trip also! Your time and help is always appreciated.
