It has been so lovely to welcome you all into Year 5 and to see some familiar faces! We have had a really positive start to the year, and it has been wonderful to see everyone settling into our new routines, getting to know our classroom and beginning to think about the kind of Year 5 we want to be.
We have spent some time considering our school values and what it means to put these into practice in our everyday lives. We thought about how our values link to our understanding of ourselves, the people around us and our friendships. We also learned that virtues are positive habits which help us to become better people. We discussed how we can practise these virtues through our everyday actions. For example, if we value kindness, we might notice someone sitting on their own and invite them to join us, or simply take the time to ask someone how they are feeling. The more we practise these actions, the more natural they become. We considered how putting our values into practice can make a difference not only to ourselves, but also to our classroom and wider school community.
In Geography, we have also begun our My Place in the World learning. We started by thinking about what life is like in our local area of Marylebone. We explored data from the 2026 Marylebone Ward Profile and challenged ourselves to interpret a range of graphs and statistics. We began to consider what the data can tell us about the people who live in our local area, including the population and different aspects of life in Marylebone. We have already discovered that graphs can sometimes be rather tricky to interpret, so we have been developing our skills in carefully reading data and thinking about what it actually tells us!
Finally, we began our learning about our House Saints: St George, St David, St Patrick and St Andrew. We first considered what a saint actually is and learned that saints were real people who tried to follow Jesus and put their faith into action. We discovered that, despite being remembered for their faith and courage, saints did not have perfect or easy lives. They faced struggles, difficult choices and, in some cases, persecution and suffering.
We explored the lives of our four House Saints and thought about the challenges they faced and how they responded to them. We considered what their lives can teach and inspire us to do today. We thought carefully about how the qualities shown by our saints could be reflected in our own lives and how we might put these qualities into practice.
It has been a wonderful first few days in Year 5, and we are so proud of the positive start everyone has made. Well done, Year 5, for a fantastic first few days!
