19.5.20 Geography printable

Today we are going to do some Geography. We are going to look at countries in the world that are hot

You will also see and hear the word equator a lot.

The Equator is an imaginary line around the middle of the Earth. It is halfway between the North and South Poles, and divides the Earth into the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.

If your country is closer to the equator, the hotter it will be!

Today in England (where we live) the weather is:

Normally it isn’t this warm in May!

England is in the Northern Hemisphere. It never gets very hot because the northern hemisphere is further away from the sun. We are closer to the equator than the Arctic which means we get warm summers and cold winters.

The weather and temperatures around the world are very different.

Watch this video to help you learn more.

Fun fact!

United-Kingdom is 3,827.45 mi (6,159.69 km) north of the equator.

This video will help you!

The hottest and driest place on Earth is a place in North America called ‘Death Valley’ (it doesn’t have a very nice name!). The hottest temperature ever recorded was 57 degrees! That is 32 degrees hotter than today!!

Some resources to help you!

All about hot and cold countries

Equators and hemispheres

If you finish your research quickly, you could have a go at labelling a world map.

If you have a thermometer, you could put it outside to measure the temperature.

I am in school today so it might be a while before I reply to all your comments. I am excited to see your research! I hope you enjoy the activity.

  1. Some countries are hot because they are close to the equator. Others are cold because they are far from the equator.
Hot countries close to the equator are for example countries in Africa such as Chad, Niger, Uganda. But also Ecuador, Colombia or Indonesia.
The weather in these countries is very hot, sometimes very dry like deserts.

  2. Good morning Miss Travers,

    1. The closer you are to the equator the hotter it will be as the sun is close to there. The futher away you are from the equator the colder it will be.

    2. I used my world map to find countries close to the equator.

South America- Colombia, Peru, Brasil and Ecuador.
Africa- Gabon, Uganda, Kenya, Somalia and Democratic Republic of The Congo.
    Asia- Maldives, Indonesia.

    3. The weather is very hot in countries near the equator. Tropical areas can have wet and dry seasons. Some areas are wet for most of the year. I am very surprised that you can even ski on the equator in Ecuador as it snows there!

  3. Clémence says:

    Hello Miss Travers,
Some countries are hot because they are closed to the Equator and some countries are cold because they are far from the Equator and closed to the poles. Also, the distance from the sun and the sea make a difference.

  4. * Some countries are hot because they’re close to the equator and some countries cold because they’re part of the arctic climate.

    * Countries close the equator are:
Cabo Verde, The Maldives, United Arab Emirates, The kingdom of Thailand.

    * The weather there is very hot.And most of the time in these countries people need air conditionned to feel a bit fresh

  5. Jaidee ? says:

Some countries are hot because they are near the equator and also near the sun. Some countries are cold because they are far from the equator.
The countries near to the equator are Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil, Uganda, Kenya , Somalia and Indonesia.
The weather is hot in the countries near the equator.

  6. Hi miss travers,

The countries are hot and close to the equator are:
    Iraq
    Iran
    Oman
    Sudan
    India
    Saudi Arabia
    Mexico
    Somalia
    And many more.
The weather of this country is very hot. People used airconditioning for them to survived the hot ?

  7. Gabrielle says:

    Good morning Miss Travers,

The closer you are to the equator the hotter it will be. The futher away it will be.

I found that the equator passes through 13 countries, some of which I have never heard of: Ecuador, Sao Tome & Principe, Gabon, Maldives, and Kiribati.

I also found out a fun fact: although the weather is generally hot in the equator, there is a mountain where we can ski!

Finally, I discovered that we live in the Northern Hemisphere, where more than 80% of the world population lives!

  8. Isabella says:

    Dear Miss Travers.

Some Countries are hot because they are close to the Equator. The Equator is an imaginary line that runs across the centre of the Earth. The Sun’s rays hit the Equator head on which means that the heat of the Sun is very strong in those Countries. These Countries include some parts of Africa,Maldives and Indonesia.

Some Countries are very cold because they are near to either the South or North Poles. This is because the Sun’s rays are spread out more because of the curve of the Earth. Very few people live in this part of the World because it’s too cold.

Other Countries close to the Equator are Brazil, Columbia, Ecuador and also Arizona which is in America. These Countries have a tropical rainforests climate or an desert climate. Very few people live in these parts of the World because it is too hot. The weather In a desert climate is very dry and the temperature can go as high as 50c.

The temperature outside today is 26.5c. The U.K has a temperate climate.

I will label the map when my dad can print it out.

  9. Hi Miss Travers
The more the counties are close to the Equator the hot they are and the more far they are from the Equator more cold they are.

    Hot countries
    Brazil, Ecuador , Thailand.

The weather in this countries are very hot the all year. I know that because when I go back to Brasil I feel hot day and night.

  10. Hello Miss Travers,

The closer you are to the Equator the hotter the country and the further away you are from the equator he colder the country.

The countries that are close to the Equator are:
    – Brazil
    -Kenya
    -Gabon
    -Maldives
    -Indonesia

The weather in these countries is very hot which means it could get very dry and sometimes very wet.

  11. I measured the temperature in my home, it is 26. Outside it is 25. It is hotter inside than outside today.

The countries close to the equator are hot because they are closer to the sun.

Brazil, Indonesia, Gabon and Colombia are countries close to the equator. The weather in Brazil is hot and humid. It is winter in Brazil when it is summer in England.

  12. 1. If some countries are close to the equator they are hot but if not they are cold.
    2. Brazil, Indonesia, Australia and Polynesia.
    3. Hot summer and high temperature.

  13. Good Afternoon Miss Travers

Where the suns rays miss the earth it is cold and when the suns hit the earth it is a hot. The equator is in the middle of the earth and the suns rays hit there the brightest so countries close to the equator are hot and as you fly from the equator the countries get colder.
Places nearer the sea or ocean are cooler.

Some countries close to the equator are Brazil, Maldives, Colombia, Kenya, Uganda and The Congo.

I looked in my atlas and lions live in Kenya and the people are called the Maasai. The Maldives is in the Indian Ocean. Brazil is South America and capoeira is from there.

Gorillas are found in the Congo.

  14. Because they are in different parts of the globe ? and close they are to the sea or ocean.
Some countries are hot because they have sun and they are near equator. The other cold countries like Antarctica, South Pole and North Pole are far away from the equator.

The countries that are near the equator Gabon, Republic of the Congo, The Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, Kenya, Somalia, Indonesia, Ecuador, Colombia and Brazil.

The weather in this countries is very dry and sunny and hot. The hotties place in the world in in equator and I called Death Valley. The temperature there goes to 50 degree celsius.

I took my thermometer out today and it showed that it is 25 degrees celsius.

  15. Hi Miss Travers,

Some countries are cold if they are far from the equator and hot if they are closer to the equator because they get the heat of the sun directly.

Philippines, India, Jamaica, China and Japan are near the equator so the weather is hot although Japan and China have cold or winter season.

Me and my mum checked the outside temperature on the way home from the hub using heer mobile phone. It was hot at 26 degrees!

  16. Miss Travers says:

Well done everyone! I have read all of your comments, super work! I have found out some new facts myself! I liked that some of you checked the temperature outside, it was a hot day today!
It is even hotter tomorrow so make sure you stay safe if you are going in the sun!

  17. The equator is an invisible line across the world.
Some places are hotter than others because they are nearer the equator.
The sun goes directly onto places that are nearer the equator and makes them really hot.
If you live really far away from the equator, it will be very cold.
Rainforests are really warm but it rains a lot. The desert doesn’t get any rain so it is always really hot and dry there. Death Valley has a very scary name and is the hottest place in the world.
England is cold in winter and sometimes in autumn and spring. When it is summer in England, it is winter in Australia.
Antarctica is cold all year round. Iceland is cold too. I want to go there to see the northern lights.
I went to Aruba and it was really hot. It is the nearest to the equator I have been.
Climate change is changing all temperatures, making them all hotter.

  18. Miss Travers says:

    Such interesting research, well done!
    I enjoyed reading this!
