The poem ‘Promise’ that we looked at yesterday is called a ‘Free Verse Poem’ as it has no set rhyme or rhythm.

Task
On Thursday, we are all going to write our own ‘Free verse poems’ about this period in history.
Think of a theme:
- The sounds, smells and sights of nature
- Your family
- The empty streets and empty buildings
- The acts of kindness that we read about or see about.
- The NHS heroes
- Rainbows
What will you focus on? Comment below and let me know!
Once you thought of your theme, have a go creating a mind map in your Home Learning Books jotting down all your ideas. Can you include figurative language? The success criteria below may help you
Success Criteria:
- Choosing words that fit the topic, mood and audience
- Choosing meaningful vocabulary
- Checking my spelling using a dictionary
- Use figurative language (metaphor and personification)
- Effectively uses repetition in the poem
- The poem has a clear message

I think I am going to focus on the boredom of staying at home. It gets rather boring when you are stuck at home and you can’t do much with your friends.

I think i will be focusing on the colorful rainbows and the empty town then maybe even on our NHS heroes.
My first verse might turn out like this:
We see them everywhere,
On windows high above and windows low below.
We see them color the window,
These beautiful signs of hope…

In my poem I am going to focus on nature for example:
● There is not as much pollution in the air
● The fish, dolfins, and sharks are all free ( yesterday I saw a whole pod of dolfins jumping around in the sea really close to the beach )
● There are so many animals walking around freely

The streets are lonely
With no one at all.
The wail of kids.
Sad kids.
The tantrums of kids.
Angry kids.
The silent crying of kids.
Scared kids.
But we are all here.
We are all in this together.
No matter what.
We will all still be here.

Here are some of my ideas:
> The mood will be sad because the theme is about losing a loved one.
> it will have many adjectives in it such as sorrowful and mourning etc.
>The first and last line will be repeated to give more expression and repetition.
> I will also check my spelling in a dictionary and I will also look for better adjectives using an online thesaurus.

I will focus on nature, plants and animals because we should learn to notice plants and animals and appreciate them, so I am going to right a poem about that.

Hi Miss Gorick, here is my first idea of the free-verse poem:
NHS Heroes working so hard and determined to fight the virus.
Happily, they have their effort supported by the public.
Struggling every day by the number of patients.
Clapping begins every Thursday at 20:00, the whole country claps for #clap for our carers.
Always prepared to do God’s mission and sometimes they fear but they have God by their side.
Researching information, they try to invent a vaccine.
Even though they aren’t wearing capes and they cannot fly, they are always prepared for an alert.
Receptionist, who welcome the ill patients, to the teams who work 24/7 all deserve a big cheer.
Say a giant cheer Hooray to our heroes
(The first letter of each sentence will read vertically as NHS CARERS? )
Wow! Anahi, I am so impressed (and these are only your first ideas!!). What an emotive and meaningful poem-it is also so clever to spell out NHS CARERS using the beginning letters-well done.
