There are lots of differences between England and Antarctica!

Have a look at this world map:

Some interesting facts about Antarctica!

Antarctica is a very cold place.

It is called a desert because it doesn’t often rain there – it is very dry, icy place.

Plants and trees don’t grow in Antarctica because it is too cold. Instead people have to grow plants in greenhouses. The temperature is warmer in the greenhouse so that makes the plants grow.

Not many people stay and live in Antarctica. It is too cold but animals like penguins like to live there.

Have a look at Google Earth to see if you can see where we live and then try and find Antarctica.

  1. Hello Miss Travers,

The weather is different in Antarctica to the UK because it can get down to -60. It is covered in snow and ice and is very windy. It is a desert because it hardly ever rains. Only Scientists stay there to learn about our planet. There are no schools. It has Emperor penguins which are the largest in the world, we don’t have them in the UK (only in the zoo). Plants and trees only can grown in greenhouses. You can go by plane or boat. In summer the sun never sets and in winter the sun never rises. It only has these two seasons. It is fifty times the size of the UK.
I found it very interesting researching Antarctica! 🙂

    Hello Saoirse,
So many interesting facts! I really enjoyed reading your research and I also learnt lots more about Antarctica. Well done!

  3. Antarctica is a continent located in the south pole in the middle of the southern ocean. It is the coldest windiest and driest place on Earth. It is covered in snow and ice called glaciers. There are icebergs.
Antarctica is one of the hardest place to get to. The only people living in Antarctica are scientists who try to save the planet. The are a few animals like penguins.
In the summer it is never dark because the sun never sets. There are beautiful southern lights at night in winter.

  4. Miss Travers says:

Interesting research! I would like to go there to see the lights and also to see the penguins!

  5. Antarctica is at the very bottom of the map, in the south pole. It is the windiest (wind speeds at 351 kms an hour!) and coldest and driest place in the world. Temperature can go down to -60C during winter. The sun never sets, even at night! Only penguins live in Antartica and a few scientists who do some research on climate change. It has a lot of icerbergs – one was 115kms long!

  6. Miss Travers says:

Very interesting facts! I enjoyed reading it! I think -60 is too cold! I don’t think I would be able to be outside for that long!

  7. The weather is very different in Antartica because it is very cold.
They do not have houses but they have stations for scientist experiments. There is no school there because nobody live there except scientists. There are polar bears and penguins.

  8. Miss Travers says:

    Very interesting research! Well done!

  9. Antarctica is at the very bottom of the map and covers Earth’s South Pole.
The weather is very different from London as is freezing there.
Antarctica is the coldest place on Earth and it’s too cold for people to live there for a long time.
Antarctica has two seasons: summer and winter.
In this continent, there are penguins, whales, seals and white bears.
There are scientists and tourists who are going there by boat or plane. I would be happy to go there as a scientist and see some penguins!

  10. Miss Travers says:

Well done! Excellent research! I would love to see the penguins!

  11. Hi miss travers!

Antarctica is very cold place and windiest in the world. The winter temperature can be -60 dc.
Nobody live permanently, only scientists stay there to work and carry out research to protect the planet. The animals can live there are penguins, seals and other animals can live in the coldest place and we cannot find it in the UK maybe in the zoo.
People can get there on the plane or by boat.

  12. Miss Travers says:

Interesting facts! Would you like to visit?

  13. In Antarctica it is very very low temperature and in England it is normal temperature and very sunny.

  14. Miss Travers says:

Well done for finding a difference between England and Antarctica!

  15. Antarctica is located at the very bottom of map in the South Pole. The weather is very different from London, because it is the coldest place on earth. The temperature can go down to -60 degrees. There are no houses there because no one lives there permanently. Only the scientists stay there.. The animals that live in Antarctica are penguins ?, seals, orcas and blue whales. Tourists visit during the summer. One can go there by plane or boat.

  16. Miss Travers says:

Brilliant research! I enjoyed reading it! I am learning new things too!

  17. The weather in Antarctica is different from the weather in England. In England we have four different seasons (Autumn, Summer, Spring, and Winter) and in Antarctica they have two seasons: Summer and Winter. In Summer they have only day time and in Winter they have only night. There are no houses there. The only people that go there are tourists and scientists. In Antarctica there’s no schools, no houses, no hospitals, no buildings. There’s only a lot of ice and animals that we only see in the zoo like penguins, birds, seals, whales and other sea animals. To get to Antarctica you need to get on a boat.

  18. Miss Travers says:

    Excellent research!

  19. It is snowy in Antarctica. Penguins live in Antarctica where it is very cold, but they do not live in England because there is not enough snow. People do not go to school and there is no houses. Antarctica is bigger than China and England.

  20. Miss Travers says:

    Well done Flavia! Excellent research!

  21. Antarctica is in the South Pole and it’s like a desert because it never rains. It’s very windy, very very cold. Only scientists stay there because they are learning about our planet. Only penguins can live there, they don’t have any schools or any houses. And in summer the sun never sets.

  22. Miss Travers says:

    Interesting research!

  23. Dear Miss Travers.

    Antarctica.

Antarctica is way down in the middle of the Southern Ocean. It’s bigger than the U.K and it’s covered in ice and snow. It’s the coldest, driest and windiest continent in the World. There are mountains that run down the middle of Antarctica and Vinson Massif is large mountain in Antarctica and it’s three times bigger than Ben Nevis which is the tallest mountain in the U.K. Vinson Massif is 21kg long and 13km wide.

During the Summertime in Antarctica the sun never sets so it is always daytime and there is no nighttime.

The Antarctica peninsula is surrounded by water and there are icebergs in the sea. Scientists have noticed that the warm water is making the ice melt and the sea levels to rise all around the World.

The only humans that live in Antarctica are the scientists that live in the research stations. The Animals that live in Antarctica include Penguins, seals, sea lions, dolphins and whales.

In the Winter there are Southern lights over the South Pole. The lights turn pink, purple, green, yellow and blue and I think they are the most beautiful and the most magical thing I have ever seen.

How do I know how the lights look? Because I just looked it up on the internet. One day I hope that I can go there to see the Southern Lights.

  24. Miss Travers says:

I would like to see them too! Very interesting research. I enjoyed reading it!

  25. Hi miss Travers.

  27. The weather there is really, really cold. In london we sometimes have cold weather, but not that cold!
They have polar bears, walrus’, seals, whales, snow wolf and snow leopards. But we can see some of their animals at the zoo, like penguins. Some people get a plane there, it is a special one, but there is lots of water so can get a boat there after a plane.

  28. Miss Travers says:

    Excellent research, Aiden!

  31. Antarctica is colder than England. It hardly ever rains and plants are grown in greenhouses because it is very cold.

In summer it is light all day and night which keeps people awake, in winter it is dark all the time and you can see the Southern Lights.

There are only a few scientists about 1000 there doing work and research. You can reach Antarctica by boat from South America.

There are Emperor penguins and leopard seals , the seals eat the penguins and the penguins eat krill.
I would like to visit to see the penguins and the southern lights

There are 2 very small schools for the scientists children. Recently there are more wind turbines for power.

  32. Miss Travers says:

Such interesting research, Jacob! I learnt a lot!

  33. Antarctica is the coldest place on earth. It is a contient and it is very hard to get to. Some animals live in Antarctica like Emperor pengiuns and Orca ( whale) and seals. It is covered in Ice sheets and has little rain and snow so it is called a desert. Antarctica has only two seasons Summer and Winter. It has no bushes or trees and one day of the year the sun is out for 24hours. No people live there but some tourists and scientists go to visit.

  34. Miss Travers says:

    Excellent research, Jay! Well done!

  35. Antarticia is at the bottom of the earth ? and its very cold ?
and with very tall mountains ? and there are reaserch stations
to protect the planet and penguins.
It is the coldest place Of the world.

When it’s summer the sun never stets.

In Antarctica it rains a bit and it blows very cold wind ?.
In England we have all seasons.

In Antarctica ?? there is no houses ? because it’s very cold ?.

There is no school ? because nobody lives there only penguins ?.

In England we have cats ? and dogs and in Antarctica ?? only
    penguins.
They can go by boat but it will take a long time to get there.
We don’t have the same time as the Antarctica. In Antarctica you can live research stations and put a jacket because it’s very cold.

There are some similarities between England and Antarctica. The is snow in the winter.

  45. Hello Miss Travers,
I really enjoyed doing this. I love watching Frozen Planet with my mum and David Attenborough is my favourite.
Antartica gets as cold as minus 60 degrees and the coldest day was in 1983 when it was minus 89.2 degrees.
Antartica was formed when a larger ancient continent called Gondwana broke into pieces. The south pole can be found in the Antarctic.
Emperor and Adelie Penguins are the two main types of penguin that live there. Other animals that can be found there are the King penguin, leopard seals, killer whales, the wandering albatross and krill, which most of the animals eat. The blue whale visits Antarctica every summer. The blue whale is the biggest whale. My favourite whale is the blue whale.

  46. Miss Travers says:
