Using a Calendar

Have a look and discuss this calendar with someone at home:
What do you notice?
Is it easy to understand or confusing?

There are 7 days in the week.
These are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
The first day of the week is Monday.
The last day of the week is Sunday.
The days from Monday to Friday are called weekdays.
The days Saturday and Sunday are called weekends.
After Sunday comes Monday again.

In October 2014 there were 3 full weeks. Remember a week has 7 days.
There were 31 days in total in October 2014.

The 10th day of October 2014 is Friday.

Have a look at the calendar for the whole of 2014 below.
What does it tell you?

There are 12 months in the year.
The first month is January.
The last month is December.
Do you know all of the months of the year?

This calendar shows the year 2020 (now):

Sometimes calendars show Sunday before Monday to show that the days of the week continue to loop.

Try the MNP pages. You will need some colouring pencils for the first worksheet. Don’t forget to ask on the blog if you need help!

  1. Dear Miss Lee,
We have a calendar in our kitchen where we write down important things. I always look at it to see what day we are and the nice events that will come. Sometimes my mom forgets to move the magnet that marks the day and I do that for her.
    Have a great weekend!

  2. Hello Camila!
That is a great way to keep organised and wonderful to look forward to some nice events!
It is lovely that you are helpful at home by moving the magnet!
    Have a lovely weekend!

  3. Dear Miss Lee.

I have emailed you my maths no problem sheets 112-118.

There are 365 days in the year, except when it is a leap year and there are 366 days because there is an extra day on February 29th which only happens every 4 years. There are usually only 28 days in February as it is the shortest month.

I know all the months of the year.

  4. Super work Isabella well done!
I am impressed with how much you know already about the months and year!

  5. Miss Travers says:

Well done! Did you know this year is a leap year? We had 29 days in February!
