Our first topic in Year 2 is…
London

This topic allows us to explore the wonderful city that we live in. We will learn lots of interesting information from the history of the Great Fire of London to the amazing buildings we see today.

To get us thinking about our new topic, read the questions below and post your answers on the blog! I look forward to reading about your ideas!

  1. 1. I have visited Hyde Park and the statue of Peter Pan. I have taken a waterbus and seen the London Eye from the Thames. I have seen Buckingham Palace from outside and also crossed Tower Bridge. I went to the British Museum and to the Science Museum with Year 1. I have visited the London Zoo many times!
    2. Every day at Buckingham Palace there is the Changing of the Guard at 11.30. The underground is called the Tube!
    The river in Hyde Park is called Serpentine.
    3. I would like to learn about the people who live in London. And I would love to visit the London Eye and Buckingham Palace.

  3. I have visited Big Ben, it is really tall and has a clock on top. At the moment it is covered in scaffolding because they are fixing it.
    I have been to London aquarium and on the London Eye when my grandma and cousin visited me.
    I go to the beach on the southbank when it is sunny.
    I like to ride my bike to St. Paul’s cathedral. I climbed the steps all the way to the top once with my mummy. It was really tiring and I had to go up a million steps. You can see all of London from there.
    I really like to go Hamleys toy shop because they have lots of amazing toys.
    Me and my mummy always go to the sky garden. It is in the walkie talkie building and you go to the very top and you can see St Paul’s cathedral, the Tower of London and the London eye.
    I know about the great fire of London. Lots of buildings got destroyed. I would like to learn more about the great fire of London and what happened exactly.
    My favourite park is a park near St. Paul’s cathedral called Postman’s Park.
    There is a wall that has signs on it with all the people who have died trying to save people’s lives, like a boy who tried to save his friend who was stuck in quicksand.

  4. The Great Fire of London started in a bakery in Pudding Lane and spread around the whole city because the houses were made of wood and it was very dry because the summer was very hot that year. The houses were destroyed by the fire and they decided to build houses in bricks afterwards. This happened on 2 September 1666 and lasted for 4 days.

  5. Excellent facts about the Great Fire of London Louise. It is so interesting finding out about this event in history! We will study the Great Fire of London lots in class 🙂

  9. I have been to London Zoo, the Science Museum, The Natural History Museum, Camden Town, I have see London Bridge, I have watched the Changing of the guards at Buckingham Palace.

    London has millions of people from all over the world that live in the city. The Queen has a palace and lots of guards in London.

    I would like to learn more about London’s different transport and the history of Guy Fawkes

  11. 1. I have been to London Zoo, Trafalgar Square to see the big lions and Paddington Station where I saw a statue of Paddington Bear. I went ice skating at the Tower of London.

    2. All the buses are red. London is very big and has lots of busy roads.

    3. I would like to learn more about Guy Fawkes and all the important buildings in London.

  12. Well done Zoe, ice skating at the Tower of London sounds so fun! I have seen the statue of Paddington Bear at the station too! It is a very busy train station isn’t it! 🙂

  15. The Great plague in London happened in 1665, one year before the Great Fire of London. It was a bit like the Coronavirus, people were ill and they had to stay home, and put a cross on the door. Doctors were wearing masks. Now we cannot catch it any more because there is medicine.

  17. 1. I have visited the Natural History Museum, the transport museum, London Zoo, I saw Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, Tower Bridge and I spend a lot of time in Hyde Park.
    2. There is a queen who lives in London. I love the old red buses and the amazing Hamleys toys shop!
    3-During this topic, I would like to know more about the Great Fire of London and the others queens and kings.

    1. I have visited Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, London Zoo
    The Science museum , The Natural History Museum, I saw a Mr Men exhibition at the Tate Modern. I went to see Tower Bridge and the gardens at Fulham Palace.

    2. London is the capital of the UK. The River Thames is in London and Tower Bridge lift up to let boats through as its not that big.
    There are millions of people in London. There are lots of cinemas and shops and football teams.

    3. I would like to know how deep the tube tunnels are underground and how special is the queen.
    How tall are buildings like the Shard.

    I have visited many of the London landmarks during the weekend or holiday such as Hyde Park and the great Diana Memorial fountain as well as the Diana playground, Regent Park & all its amazing playgrounds, The Aquarium (even with the school), the Wallace Collection, the Toys Museum, the Transport Museum, the Science Museum (a lot!!!)& its Wonder Lab part (which I enjoy going with my little brother), the Natural History Museum (a lots of times too)…

    2. The most incredible fact I can think of is that the Queen lives in London and very very close to me!!! We haven’t seen her there but we saw her amazing guards on horses. I also almost meet the Queens only I was napping at the time.

    3. I like to learn more about the Royal family and her wonderful Parks and also how to bring more trees and plants in our beautiful city.

There are 8 million people in London, 5 Royal Parks, Big Ben was named after the bell, it is the capital city of England, the Queen lives in Buckingham Palace, Tower Bridge opens and closes when tall ships come by. During the war children had to sleep in the Underground tunnels. The Thames that runs through London comes from very far and it is 346 km long.

    3. I want to know how many water parks are in London.
    I also want to know how people built houses.

  27. 1. I have visited London Zoo, Queen’s Mary Garden, Hyde Park, Regent’s Park, Tower Bridge, London Eye ,Big Ben and the National History Museum.

    2. The Queen celebrates two birthdays each year: her actual birthday on 21 April and her official birthday on the second Saturday in June. Last year I was there.

    3. I would like to know everything.

  29. 1-Hyde Park is in central London and is the largest park in the Central Park and the royal parks of London. In fact is called London’s most famous green space.

    In Hyde Park you can find these attractions:
    – Kensington Palace and Garden.
    – Lady Diana Memorial, where I have lots of fun in the summer.
    – Serpentine Bridge.

    Serpentine is a lake on the Hyde Park were I go to feed the swans and ride in a boat. Queen Caroline ordered the building of the lake which is 40-acre.

    I would like to know about the London Eye.
