Daily SPaG Challenge

What is a comma? When do we use one?

A comma: ,

We use commas in a list to separate items.

These items are sometimes real things. For example:

I need some pens, pencils, paper and a calculator before I start my class.

These items are sometimes things you do, or places you go. For example:

Yesterday I went to work, played badminton, had snails for dinner and then went to bed.

BEWARE!

Always use and to separate the last two items on your list.
Make sure you don’t use a comma before the word and at the end of your list.
Don’t use commas where you should use a full stop. If the words could stand alone as a proper sentence, then you need to put a full stop or a conjunction.

Sometimes, we use commas when we add extra information to a sentence (for example when we add a subordinating clause or a relative clause). For example:

The car, which was parked by the light, had a dog in the back seat.

  2. Clown fish angel fish and all other types of fish breathe through their gills.
  3. One ordinary day I decided to go for a walk.
  4. Green is a popular colour however my favourite colour isΒ  ________.
  5. For my dinner I had potatoes salmon green beans and some broccoli.
  6. As I walked through the park I was followed by a squirrel.

When you have written these sentences with the commas in the correct places, go to our Class 4 reading blog. Either, write a new book review or prediction making sure you use commas correctly. Or reply to someone else on the reading blog. You need to write a paragraph and ensure you use capital letters, full stops AND commas like a pro!

I look forward to reading some more of your predictions and book reviews over on the reading blog! πŸ˜€
