Good morning everyone 😀

A fun D&T (Design and Technology) activity for you to do today!

Since we have been learning about Extreme Weather in class, I would like you to design an earthquake-proof building.

Look at the buildings below:

What makes them unique?

What do you notice about their:

  • shape
  • base
  • walls

Do you think any of the buildings above have any of the following features?

  • Deep foundations to add stability to the building.
  •  X-shape supports prevent the building from twisting and make it stronger.
  • Emergency shut off switches for gas and electricity to prevent fires.
  • Thin walls with steel bars help to reduce the movement of the building.
  • Sprinkler system to put out any fires.
  • Shock absorbents in the base can absorb the shock waves produced by the earthquake.
  • Shutters on windows to stop any falling glass.

In your yellow books from your home learning packs, design and label your very own earthquake-proof building.

You might want to use some of the features above as well as think of your own.

If you want to, you could do some further research on the buildings about to help you, or you can write on the blog and ask any questions 🙂

When you have drawn and labelled your design clearly, see if you can make a model of your design using recycled materials in your home. If you do, it would be great if you could sent a picture of your model in and I will post it on the website! If you can’t make a model, send in a picture of your labelled design.

Remember to use a ruler if you are drawing straight lines and try to make your drawing clear and neat!

After you have designed (and possibly made) your earthquake-proof building, write a short paragraph describing it on this blog!

Have fun! I can’t wait to see and read about all of your designs!

Be creative!

From Miss Lee 😀

?

A big thank you to those children that sent in photographs of their designs and their models:

I hope to be sent in more designs soon!

  1. My building is entirley made out of glass. But don’t worry, because it has a huge iron door which covers up the whole thing, inside and out. It has fire sprinklers and it is deepley enforced into the ground.

  2. Sounds great! I can’t wait to see your design!

  3. My house is under ground and has got an earth quake monitor and has escape pods.a It is made from bed rock and has steel cables to hold it in place.

  4. Sounds very creative! I am looking forward ward to seeing you design! Will you be making a model of your building?

  5. My creation is called ‘the battlefield ‘.
It looks like a big Gaia hugging the earth and it has little battle stations shaped like earth. The seats are painted red, then orange, then brown and if the earthquake is a very big one, then it gets a humongous shield out and the logo on it is a person holding the earth. The building is made out of cobblestone.

  6. Wow! I am looking forward to seeing your design!

  7. ?Emilie ? says:

My building leans forward just a little and there are escape doors at the back so whenever there’s an earthquake and the people have escaped the building will fall over the other way (if it does fall) , not crushing anyone who has left. The roof is iron so the other things that fall won’t crush it.It also has an earthquake siren which detects if the earth is shaking and if people are too late there’s an emergency room which is earthquake proof.

  8. ?Emilie ? says:

… and it has a base which is wider than the rest too keep stability.

  9. This sounds great Emilie! You have thought of some interesting ideas! I can’t wait to see the design!

  10. My building has shock absorbers to absorb the shock waves of the earthquake and deep foundations to stabilise it. In addition, it has a sprinkler system to put out fires, thin walls and steel bars.(very secure?)??

  11. This sounds great! I am looking forward to seeing your design!

  12. My building is a rectangle shape with three over ground levels and it has cross bar steel beams in the structure. The walls are made from brick and it has a bulletproof windows.

  13. Sounds great! I can’t wait to see the design!
Why have you chosen cross bar steel beams for the structure?

  14. ☄Mayowa☄ says:

My building is mostly under ground but there’s one floor where the people come in and out. It’s made out of glass and iron. It can detect earthquakes, it has mini escape pods plus if the building is the main point (very unlikely) it has a shield like a force field all around it and the shield is automatic so there are no worries?

  15. Very creative Mayowa! I look forward to seeing the design!
How will being underground protect your building and the people inside?

  16. Mine is under the water and if there’s an earthquake a safety submarine will come and go somewhere else. Don’t worry it’s not gonna make tsunami because my building is not next to land!

    Isn’t that great?
    ??????

  17. Very interesting and imaginative! What is your building made out of? Will you be making a model of it at home?

  18. Dear Miss Lee,

For the earthquake proof building I took inspiration from a building in Japan, called Fa-bo,that is rooted to the site by hundreds of carbon fibres. I will send a photo of the model to the school email.
I have used 2 cardboard boxes and black sewing thread.

  19. Mine has a thick and strong bottom structure made out of steel to hold it in place and tough wires on each side to secure it even more.
On the second floor there’s a control room with lots of buttons and a big red button in the middle of the others to sound the alarms.on the third floor there is just a big window and on the fourth there is a escape room and a lot of jetpacks to jump of the balcony to escape and to get up there is a ladder.
