Design and Technology

As part of our research about the Iron Age we have found out about where the best place to build an Iron Age settlement was.

Task

1. Your Design and Technology task is to design your own hill fort. You can use your homework book to draw your design and label it.
Before you draw your design, you make like to practise designing a hill fort here.

2. Now you have designed your hill fort. Can you make it? Have a look around your house for things you could use, you may even like to use lego/objects around the house – be creative!

3. Answer this question on the blog:
What features of your design make your hill fort a strong safe place to defend?

Once you have had a go at making your hill fort, include how you made it in your blog post, it will be interesting to see what different things everyone uses!

Good luck!

  1. First I made the walls to protect the people who will live there. The walls can be made out of stone or wood. Then the gate, so the guards can open it if the people who are coming are friends or citizens. Then, I made some houses so the citizens can live and work there. Later on, I put a couple of animals there, like a cow for milk and a chicken for eggs and meat. My fort is also inhabited by craftsmen who make swords, knifes, pickaxes, hoes and slingshots. At the end I made some traps so it would be harder for the enemies to get in and attack.

This sounds impressive Helena! You have thought through your design carefully.

  3. First I made an entrance so no one will brake in. Next I made the walls to protect the people that live there. After that I made the houses so that they can stay warm. Then I put some cows for milk chickens for egg and meat. I think that the people that live there will like it alot. Finally I made security so anyone that doesn’t live there will not enter.

Sounds like a good plan Gabriella!

  5. First I will make the walls out of stone so nobody will break in . Next I will make the big houses so they can be safe and work in a big area where they can put their tools, clothes and souvenirs. Then I make a barn for the cows, sheep, chickens and pigs so they can eat meat, eggs and milk from those animals. Finally I will build security men wearing metal suits to protect the citizens in the houses so if someone attacks they will hurt the attackers and make them surrender.

    Great Chloe!

  7. I made a hill fort out of cardboard box and Lego. For the protection walls I used the cardboard box so no one could break in. I used the Lego to make the roundhouses so that the Iron Age celts would be safe inside their houses and have big spaces to work. I used a grape box to make a gateway, it had two entrances, one in the front and one in the back. This added protection because they had two gates and two lots of security to pass through before entering the fort. I have emailed a picture to the office email address.

Well done Ethan – I’ve just seen your photo of your hill fort. The roundhouses look very well built with the Lego and I don’t think anyone would get over those high walls!

  9. First of all, I built many mountains so that my opponent could not get through so quickly. Later I built a wall and left a hole for the door. I then started preparing houses for people to make them feel safe and happy, and then prepared the weapons for the first fight. I prepared barns for the animals so that people would not feel hungry. Finally I built a bonfire of stones and sticks to keep people warm in the winter.

    Great design Karolina ?

  11. First I designed very high wall for protection and put some rocks at the bottom to support all construction so no intruders will break in. I designed a big gate with two places for guards to protect the entrance. Next I built houses with chimneys for people who will live in it and stay safe. I designed work places where they will store their tools and weapons. I designed the place for the cows, sheep and chickens where they will have eggs, milk and meat. At the end I planted flowers as a decoration next to each house. I Hope people who will live in my hill fort will be happy and safe.

I like the fact that you added flowers, Chloe, because life is always more cheerful with flowers! What are you going to use to build your fort, now that you have designed it?

  13. First I made a mote on a very steep hill then I built a wall 26 m high. Then I made pillars with a crossbows and quivers full of arrows. After that I made a very big gate to the hill fort. Then I created houses and farms. After that I created all the cosy heat using hay for the roofs and a campfire.
