Choose one or two pieces to listen to and answer the questions below.

What piece did you listen to?

What did you like about it?

What instruments could you hear?

Now try this:

  • Respond to each piece of music with a drawing. It can just be mark making, move your pencil with the music. Dance across the page!
  • If you have an instrument at your house, have a go at playing along. If you do not have an instrument, you could make a drum from anything you have in the house or use beads and a plastic bottle to make a shaker.
  • Move your body to the music, come up with a dance or exercise routine.
  • Could you come up with some lyrics to sing along to the piece of music?

  3. Miss Savage says:

What instruments can you hear in the music Rocco?

  4. Good morning Miss O’Connell, I have chosen 2 pieces:

    – Grażyna Bacewicz Overture
I liked it because its lovely, sometimes it’s soft and sometimes it’s happy. I could hear the trumpet, the flute, the violon and the drums.

    – Antonín Dvořák Symphony No. 9 in E minor, ‘From the New World’ – Largo
I liked it because it’s soft and quiet, I can imagine myself like Sleeping Beauty or playing the piano. And also Elsa! I heard the flute, the drums, the violon and I discovered the oboe!

  5. Miss Savage says:

Wow Maya, you must have been listening very carefully.

  6. Ms O'Connell says:

Hi everyone I have chosen Gershwin ..”Rapsody in blue”..my favourite.

  7. My favourite is ‘A Night on the Bare Mountain’ (Modest Massorgsky) because it scares away baddies. I could hear the flute and violin in it

  8. Miss Savage says:

Haha! The perfect theme tune for you, always chasing away the baddies. Well done Ryan.

  9. I love reading your comments Reception!
    I hope you’re all well.
One of my favourite pieces is ‘O Fortuna’ by Carl Orff. It’s really exciting and powerful. Lots and lots of different instruments (violins, drums, flutes, clarinets, trumpets, trombones, pianos) and singers all perform together

  10. My favourite was Symphony No 1 in E Minor because it has a lot of violins. I drew music notes on a notepad and used a pencil to pretend to be a conductor, and then danced to some of the other pieces. I loved this activity!

  11. Miss Savage says:

I’m glad you enjoyed the activity Harlow. You can send a picture of your work to the school office and they will send it to me so that I can share it with everyone.

  12. Raspberry blue (rhapsody in blue). It was nice. I heared a tambourine.

I was painting from the music. The painting was trees and a house – it was a crazy house because I thought it was music in there.

  13. Miss Savage says:

Please share your picture with us Florence. I would love to see it.

  14. The music ? that I have listened to made me feel like a jumping kangaroo as I listened to the bumpy music ?.
It was enjoyable and I felt happy ?.

  15. Miss Savage says:

Sounds like good exercise Theo! I love listening to music that makes you feel like dancing.

  16. I have been playing on the guitar that my godfather bought for me and pretending I am a rock star (Mum’s comment: James plays with great enthusiasm!). I am thinking of having lessons once we can go back to school.

  17. Miss Savage says:

That’s a great idea James. Which was your favourite piece of music?

  18. I can hear the drums and violins

  19. (Vivaldi’s winter). It’s from my Season’s book. it’s Winter, first movement. Also, mummy plays it all the time.
(Verdi’s Dies Irae – when prompted if God was glad or angry) . Angry. Why is God angry ?
(Mozart’s Requiem, introduction – when asked if the music was merry or serious). Serious.

  20. I listened to, Zadok the Priest by Handel. The music was a bit sad at the beginning but it got really happy and loud at the end. It reminded me of the Easter story!

  21. The electronic sounds of the Doctor Who theme made me think of walking in space and Mummy & Daddy were surprised when I said I also thought about travelling in time! I drew a space picture.

Brahms’ Hungarian Dance made me think about travelling and dancing, fun things (the fast bits) and spooky things (the slow bits). I struck some Capoeira poses.

I liked the violin in Vivaldi’s “Winter”. It made me feel cold and shivery. Best of all was the snippet of “Spring” in the intro film, although it made me think of summer.
