Good morning Class 4!
I hope you enjoy today’s geography tasks…

Just like Prospero and Miranda and the crew on board the ship in The Tempest, you have found yourself stranded on a small island somewhere between Italy and Africa.

TASK 1:

Have a look at a map of the world.

1.) Which sea would you be surrounded by?

2.) Are there actually any islands between Italy and Africa? Can you find out?

This website has a good world map:
https://geology.com/world/world-map.shtml
Or you could look on Google Maps.

TASK 2:

You are going to need to set up camp.
Here is a sketch of the island you are stranded on:

1.) Where might you set up camp and why?
Think about comfort, shelter and practicality.

2.) What resources might you find on the island which could be useful in building a shelter?
Describe what materials you would use and how/why.
If you can, you could try and build a shelter or a model of your shelter as an extra challenge.

3.) What do you think the climate is like? Why?
I look forward to hearing your thoughts and ideas!
You can complete this task in your yellow home learning book or on the blog, whichever is easiest for you.

  1. TASK 1
There isn’t a island between Italy and Africa.the closest island between Africa and Italy is Greece. The closest sea is the Atlantic Ocean because that’s the nearest to Italy.
    TASK 2
I would like to set my camp up at hot springs because you can get very cold on an island especially near the Atlantic Ocean.I would make my camp out of strong sticks and thatch to cover the sticks and I could be more warmer.I think you would find lots of trees and rocks.Bulding a shelter is very useful because you need it for maybe extreme weather or you need to sleep or even you get injured and need to rest.I think the climate will be like a mixed climate because you can get any weather.

  2. Brilliant ideas and explanations Albert, well done!

  3. Task 1:

    1) The sea that you will be surrounded by is the Mediterranean sea.

    2) Yes – I can see Corsica, Sardinia, Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera on the map.

    Task 2:

    1) I would set up a camp behind the forest, so that I can get wood for building my camp, but also next to the river so that I can get water to drink and to also cook the food that might be from the forest or the sea. I would also be close to the hot spring so that if it gets cold, I can get hot water.

    2) I might be able to find wood, mud, sand and some plants to use to build the camp shelter.

    3) I think that there is probably a bit of a wind since you are surrounded by the sea.

  4. Well done Sophie! Great work and very detailed explanations!

  5. Karter Clap For NHS says:

I would pick the jungle because it has lots of resources that you can use.And it is a very good place to live when you have a camp. These are the materials I would use metal some wood and a little bit 9f some grass for the shelter.

  6. Super ideas Karter! One question… Where would you find the metal?

  7. Hawaii

  8. Have a look at a map of the world. Is Hawaii between Italy and Africa?
Can you answer the other questions too?

  9. 1. the mediterranean sea
    2. there are 3 islands between italy and africa

on the beach or grass because they are both soft and smooth

you need sticks ,leaves and if you want flowers . you need sticks to make a fort or shelter . Leaves for the roof and if you want you can braid flowers together and use it as a carpet or blanket

  10. 1. the mediterranean sea
    2. there are 3 islands between italy and africa

i would et up a camp in the forest so i can wood an leaves from the tree and there probably would be a lke to get water.

you need sticks ,leaves and if you want flowers . you need sticks to make a fort or shelter . Leaves for the roof and if you want you can braid flowers together and use it as a carpet or blanket

  11. Great work! I like the idea of a blanket or carpet made of flowers, it would definitely make the shelter more colourful!

  12. There is an island inbetween Italy and Africa and it is called Sardinia. It is surrounded by the tyrrhenian sea.

For my shelter I would use bamboo, sticks, moss and leaves.

I have sent in a photo of my model.?

  13. Well done Holly! I have received your picture… It looks brilliant! I’ll upload it now!

  14. 1.The sea between Africa and Italy is the Mediterraenan sea
2.There are actually 2 islands between Italy and Africa they are called Malta and Lampedusa.
    task 2
1.I WOULD SET UP THE CAMP UNDER A TREE AND NEXT TO THE SEA BECAUSE IT IS WARMER SO IF I WANT TO TAKE A DIVE I DON’T HAVE T WALK FOR A LONG TIME TO GO TO THE SEA
2.STICKS, SOME GRASS, ANIMALS SKIN, SOME LEAVES AND SOME SAND TO SIT DOWN ON
    3.IT WOULD BE HOT .

  15. Well done Giordano! Some great ideas! How long do you think you could stay on a deserted island for? Would you enjoy camping there?

  16. HAWAII

  17. ISLAND
The island is certainly surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea. There are several islands between Italy and Africa: the closest between the two is Pantelleria. The others are Lampedusa, Linosa, Malta and Gozo.

    MY CAMP
I would set my camp in the woods: there I would be protected from the elements and there would probably be more food to forage and animals to hunt. From the wood is a close walk to the river, where I can get fresh water and fish.
To build my shelter I used green tissue paper, for long skewers, dried leaves, cardboard and chocolate egg wrapping. The last two I used to simulate a camp fire for Prospero and Miranda. I am sending an image of my shelter, built on a rainy balcony this morning, by email.

  18. Fantastic ideas and explanations!
I can’t wait to see the picture of your shelter! Maybe you could put a Lego man inside it and see if the shelter keeps him protected from the rain?

  19. ISLAND
The island is certainly surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea. There are several islands between Italy and Africa: the closest between the two is Pantelleria. The others are Lampedusa, Linosa, Malta and Gozo.

    MY CAMP
I would set my camp in the woods: there I would be protected by the elements and there would be probably more food to forage and animals to hunt. From the wood is a close walk to the river, where I can get fresh water and fish.

    INSTRUCTIONS FOR A SHELTER
To build my shelter I used green tissue paper, four long skewers, dried leaves, cardboard and chocolate egg wrapping. The last two I used to simulate a camp fire for Prospero and Miranda.
I have sent an email with the image of my shelter, which I have built this morning on my rainy balcony. It works and it is still there!

  20. I have just recieved the pictures… it looks amazing! I will post them on the blog now!

  21. T1.
    1.Sea:Mediterranean .
    2.Yes.

    T2.
1.I would always be on the move so my camp would be in lots of places.
2.Wood for shelter leaves for camouflage.
The climate would be change constantly.

  22. Good ideas Alfred! What are the islands called that you found?
Also your idea to always be on the move is interesting, why would you be constantly moving?

  23. Task 1
    1. The Mediterranean Sea.
    2. Yes, there are 3 Islands between Africa and Italy.
    Task 2
    1. You might want to set up the camp in a smooth area in a part of the forest that has the least wild animals because you don’t want to be sleeping on bumpy bits and the forest trees could be shelter. You also don’t want to be hurt by a wild animal.
    2. Water/Rivers a few berries and some sticks. You could put most of the sticks together to make a shelter and use the rest to make a fire. You might also be able to eat the berries that are not poisonous and filter the water so that you can drink it.
3.I think the climate might be a mix of hot and cold.

  24. TASK 1:
    1. Mediterranean Sea ?
    2. Yes, Malta and Lampedusa and Corsica
    TASK2:
    1. Between the forest and the river.
    2. The materials are grass and sticks. I choose grass because we can find lots of them in the forest. I also choose sticks because we often find them on the ground as sometimes the branches fall from the trees.
    3. I think it is a bit windy because it says that the wind is going North.

  25. Islands:
    Malta ??
    Pantellería
    Lampedusa
    Linosa
    Constantly moving:
Because wolfs, bears and other wild are dangerous.

  26. 1. We would be surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea.
    2. There are a few islands between Italy and Africa, here are a few:
    Sicily
    Malta
    Corsica

    Task 2
My shelter would be on top of a cliff so I can see any danger or food.
I am going to get hollow tree trunks and carry hot water from the hot springs to have hot water.
I would find flint to make some fire.
I will use trees from the forrest to build my shelter and cover it in leaves and branches.
Then I would use trunks and sharpen them with flint and dig them into the ground and fill the gaps with mud.

  27. Hello Miss Lee,

    Task 1
    1) Between Africa and Italy is the Mediterranean Sea.
    2) Yes there are islands between Africa and Italy. There is Malta, Sardinia and Sicily.

    Task 2
    1) I would set up camp in the forest because there is shelter and many resources.
    2) I would use grass, leaves and wood. I would make a tent made of wood and put leaves and grass on top.
    3) It would have 4 seasons like in England, but it would be warmer because it is closer to the equator. It would also be humid because it is surrounded by water.

  28. Some islands between Italy ?? and Africa include Malta ?? and Lampedusa. I would be surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea.? I would set up camp in the middle of hot springs, the forest and the mountains ?. This is because it will take me the shortest amount of time possible to get to each of them for resources. I would set up my camp facing east so that the wind will not blow inside as much. At first, I would make my tent out of some logs and then I would cover it with some moss, grassy bits of earth. I think that it would be sunny but windy because there are some mountains ⛰ and it’s near the equator

  29. task 1
    1. we would be surrounded by the North Sea.
    2. Malta is the island between Italy and Africa.
    task 2
    1. I would set a camp in between of the woods and the river. In the picture, the river gets narrow and turns into a stream. which makes it easier to cross to get to the hot springs.

    2. the river supplies water and the woods supplies food and in the woods you could get sticks and leaves to set up the tent and fire.

    for my camp I need
    .skewers
    . tiny fake leaves
    .a sheet of orange paper
    .pencils
    .a sheet of green paper
    .tape

  30. 1. Mediterranean Sea
    2. Pelagius islands, it is 3 islands off Italy’s coast.

    Task
I would live by the forest and water so I could have shelter and find food. The food and water would come from the water pools where I could fish. I would live there because I could explore and the walk would be shorter than walking down a mountain.

I would use the tree branches, vines, bamboo and leaves to build my shelter. The tree would be for the base, the bamboo and leaves for the roof and the vines to ties everything together so it would be stable.

The first picture of shelter- it is hot. The spaces let the air in to cool off. The second shelter is cold. It is covered to stay warm.

  31. Task 1
    1. The sea that I will be surrounded by is the Mediterranean sea.
    2. The islands between Italy and Africa that I saw were Sardinia, Corsica and Sicily

    Task 2
    1. I will set up my camp between the forest, the river and somewhere near the hot springs so that I could find some resources for me to survive. Maybe I could go to the forest and get some fruits or anything that is edible for me.
    2. I could go to the forest and get some twigs, branches and leaves from the trees?. Also I will try to find some big leaves for my roof. I also can get something from the hot springs like pebbles or stone to make a weapon incase something comes out of the forest, or anywhere! I can then use the stones with my twigs to make camp fire to keep me warm and to cook my food. I can also use the river to wash, and to stay at least hygienic like washing my hands.
    3. I think the climate is hot in the daytime and it’s chilly and windy at night because there is not much trees around the island.

  32. 1) the Mediterranean Sea.
    2) No, there is are a few Islands inbetween Italy and Africa like Islands called :
    Sicily
    Malta ??
    Corsica

    Task 2:
    1) I will camp in the forest though I might not be at the same place every day because of wild animals like ? ? and many more!
    2) wood to build a rooftop, leaves to camouflage, twigs , stones, flowers ?.
    3) In the forest it can be very hot in daytime and really humid at night. Outside, it would be very hot if it’s hot and really cold if it’s cold. I think that at night time it can be quite cold.

  33. Hi Miss,
    Hereby my answers:
    Task 1:
    1. Mediterranean Sea
    2. There are several islands in between Italy and Africa, like Pantelleria, Lampedusa, Linosa, Malta.
    Task 2:
    1. I would set up camp close to the hot springs and on a flat surface, not too close to the river.
    2. You can get wood from the forest to make sticks and use rocks from the mountains to shelter. And I would get mud from the river to stick them together, using big leafs that are on the island.
    3. I think it will be really hot, because the island is between Italy and Africa which are both hot countries. It will also be lots of wind because you are surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea.
    Thanks, Tijne

  35. There are at least eight islands between Italy and Africa and they are all situated across the Mediterranean Sea and the Tyrrhenian Sea
    Malta, Gozo,linosa,lampeduza,pantalleria,Graham island,maritimo.

  36. Completed in my yellow homework book miss!

  37. Task 2
I would set camp next to the hot spring water and close enough to the Sea front, the sea will have fish for food and drinking water from the hot springs, and for adventure and Vegetables and fruits in the forest.
I would look for leaves, wood, and sticks. The design of my shelter is a dome shaped circle.for comfort, I would look for bird feathers and if I would have enough of the feathers I would cover the floor with them.
The climate would be windy but sunny because Africa is very hot because it is very close to the equator.it would be windy because in an island there is no buildings and shelter.

  38. TASK 1:
    1.The mediterranean sea.
2.Islands of Corsica, Sicily and Sardinia and Malta.

TASK 2: My camp would be between the river and the hot springs.
I would use leaves and sticks to build my shelter. I think it would be hot in the day and cold at night and windy.
