Good morning, Year 5!

Today’s Maths Task: To continue to measure area.

Workbook: 5B

Chapter: 12 Area and Perimeter

Lesson: 9 and 10 Measuring the Area

Today you will continue to find the area of various 2-D shapes.

Have a look at an example with answers here:

For question 2, you would need to find the area of various sections of a 2-D rectangle. To do this what you have to do is make the connection that two of the triangular areas make one square.

As today is a continuation of finding areas of shapes, please revisit yesterday’s blog as well as the links.

Let’s take a look at this example:

These are irregular shapes but we do know how to find the area of squares and rectangles! The blue hexagon (it has six sides) is actually made of a square and a rectangle. Can you see? You can find the area of both these shapes and then add them together to find the total area.

What about the area of the green octagon? Can we find the area of two shapes and add them together? Which shapes? You could try making one rectangle out of the green octagon by moving two 2-m squares. Take your time when finding the area for the remaining shapes using either or both methods.

Watch this video of how to find the area of irregular shapes.

If you need support:

Try to see the shapes as a number of smaller areas which you can add together. All of the shapes can be divided into rectangular areas. If you have printed this (or copied the shapes into your Home Learning book), you can use a ruler to divide the shapes into rectangles. Then you can measure the length of each of the sides and label each side as you complete a measurement.

Challenge:

Can you draw a new shape with similar rectangular sections, label it with a scale and give it to someone at home to work out the area?

If you haven’t already, use this online (and printable) activity to challenge yourself on measurement.

If you finish this activity and would like to learn more maths, please head over to our Home Learning page and scroll down to ‘Maths’ to find more websites you can enjoy.

Marking your answers
As you and your parents now have access to Maths No Problem, I will continue to set daily worksheets for you to complete at home. They may be worksheets that you may have already attempted in class but that’s okay! It’s important that you revise and practise your skills. More information about how to log in to Maths No Problem can be found here.

You do not need to print these worksheets out – you can simply using your yellow books to show your working out and write your answers. You or your parents can then mark it as you now have access to the answers

Therefore you will not be required to write your answer in the blog comments section as before. Please do comment if you need help or have any questions about the task. Also, please read each other’s comments and help each other out if you can! It is important we stay in touch and talk to each other about maths using mathematical language just like we did in the classroom 🙂

Good luck!

  1. Hi everyone I did these worksheets with Seb on Skype we got all the answers correct it was easy!?

  2. Sebastiao says:

    Hi everyone,
Me and Iggy did these worksheets using Skype together. We got them all right! ?

  3. How lovely, boys! What a great way to work together on a task ‘from a distance’ !

  4. Hello Mrs Avdiu and Ms Robertson, I hope that you are all doing well. I found the first bit very easy but i found the very last page very hard. I hope everyone enjoys their day!

  5. Well done Elsa. What did you find ‘hard’? Hope your resilience paid off and you figured it out in the end 🙂

  6. Ms Robertson says:

    Hi Elsa!
I hope your perseverance paid off and you managed to complete today’s maths task – keep up your fantastic efforts! ?

  7. Hello everyone I hope you are all having a nice day!!!
I just wanted to say that I really enjoyed the maths today.
    Have a good day!

  8. Hello everyone, hope that you are all okay! i have completed all worksheets from today and yesterday and i have finished them without any problems.
    Have a good day!

  9. Hi Everyone

I did the Math No Problem by myself and I found it quite easy ?

The last two questions on Worksheet 10 I got them wrong because I was of by one number ?

I hope you all are safe and well !! ?

    ~Elena ?

  10. I’m so pleased you enjoyed today’s work! Elena, just a reminder that you don’t need to list all of your answers anymore 🙂

  11. Ms Robertson says:

I really enjoy working out the perimeter of shapes – area is a little more complicated – I find knowing your times-tables really helps!

  12. Ms Robertson says:

Well done boys – I like the way you are both staying in touch and working together! Did you complete the challenge?

  13. Hello everyone I wanted to say that I finished today’s worksheets I did struggle a bit but after a while I got the hang of it I hope you all have a wonderful day ?
    Maia ?

  14. That’s a brilliant learning attitude to have 🙂

  15. Hi everyone!

I did these worksheets and found it quite fun at the start! On the last page I found it a bit trickier but my sister explained it to me and I eventually understood! My sister also marked my work!

I hope you all have a brilliant day!

    Kayla 🙂

  16. Well done girls 🙂

  17. Hi,
Today, for the challenge, I drew an irregular shape made of triangles and rectangles. There was an area of 54cm2 and my mum worked it out in 1 minute 58 seconds (it was really hard).

  18. Hello everyone!
I hope that you are all well! I worked out the answers and got them all right. At first, I found it tricky but then my dad came and told me how to do it. Now I am pretty confident on how to work out the area of irregular polygons!
I hope you enjoy the rest of the day!

  19. Mrs Avdiu says:

I am so proud of your perseverance, Class 5. It is very reassuring to know that most of you found it quite tricky to begin with but then your resilience paid off! Well done
Don’t forget to look at the ‘Guided Practice’ on Maths No Problem as it breaks it down nicely for you.
