Addition

Remember yesterday, we started by thinking about the different words and phrases that mean ‘add’ in maths? We focused on ‘finding the sum’ of two numbers. Today we are going to look at a few more of these phrases.

Let’s look at the first example…

The question is asking us to find the total number of concert tickets sold. That means we need to add the two numbers together.

Sometimes it is easier to add the ones, then the tens, then the hundreds and then the thousands. Like this:

We should always add the ones (sometimes called the units) first in case they add to 10 or more and we need to carry some of the number over to the tens column.

If we add carefully we should get the following answer:

When we use the column method, we have to make sure we line our numbers up carefully to avoid confusing ourselves. Just like in the example above.

Let’s look at one more example together…

In this question they have used the word ‘increase’ but it is still asking us to add the numbers together. Don’t let them confuse you with different words!

So, we need to do 5678 + 1235

Remember to set your work out carefully:

Start by adding the ones (units). If they add to 10 or more, you will need to carry the ten to the tens column:

Continue adding the rest of the columns in order:

When you take time to set your working out clearly and think carefully about what the question is asking you to do it becomes less confusing.

So 5678 + 1235 = 6913
