Hello Class 4!

Your last maths task for the week…

WORKBOOK: 4B
CHAPTER: 8
WORKSHEETS: 16 and 17

CHALLENGE: Review 8 (Practise everything we have revised about decimals, can you remember it all?)

There are some extra tasks on the Bitesize links provided in the blog. If you would like some extra practise at dividing by 10 and 100, try those!

Dividing whole numbers by 10

When dividing by 10, your place value columns will come in handy!
When we divide by 10 all of the digits move one place to the right.
Let’s have a look at the question below:

There are 10 pieces of chocolate in 1 whole chocolate bar.
We can therefore say that each chocolate bar has been cut into tenths.

If each child gets 3 pieces, that is 3 tenths.
We know from yesterday that 3/10 is 0.3 as a decimal.
There are 3 tenths so 3 goes in the tenths column and we put a zero in the ones (or units) column.
Here are some more numbers being divided by 10:

Dividing whole numbers by 100

When we divide something by 100 we are dividing it into 100 equal pieces.
For example, remember we looked at a brownie and we chopped it into tenths and then hundredths?
So, imagine if I had 1 giant brownie and I had a party with 100 guests. I would need to cute the brownie into 100 equal pieces which means each guest would get one hundredth of the brownie.
If we remember our place value columns, we know that we can write this as a decimal: 0.01

When we divide by 100 all of the digits move two places to the right.
Look at this example:
