Hello Class 4!

Well done for all of your hard work this term. You are all super stars and deserve a very relaxing Half Term (although I will miss reading your blog posts every day)!

Today we will finish our money topic in maths…

WORKBOOK: 4B
CHAPTER: 9
WORKSHEETS: Chapter 9 Review

Challenge: Chapter 9 Mind Workout

Reviewing Money

If we were to round these amounts to the nearest pound we need to look at the pence. If it is less than 50, we round down. If it is 50 or more, we round up.

So, £1.55 becomes £2.00
£2.50 becomes £3.00
and £3.25 becomes £3.00

If they equally share the price, they both pay the same amount. So we need to do £12 ÷ 2 = £6
So, the friends pay £6 each.

Use the bars to help you here. The first friend pays twice as much, so the total amount has been split into 3 (as you can see, there are 3 bars).
To find out the amount that one bar represents we need to do £12 ÷ 3 = £4
But friend 1 pays the amount of two bars because he is paying twice the amount. So we need to do £4 x 2 = £8
So, friend 1 pays £8 and friend 2 pays £4

Here we need to divide the total amount by 4 (because there are 4 bars). If friend 2 pays three times as much but friend 1 is still paying one amount that makes 4 equal amounts.

£12 ÷ 4 = £3

So, to work out how much friend 2 pays we need to do £3 x 3 = £9

Friend 1 pays £3 and friend 2 pays £9

£3 + £9 = £12
