Today we are looking at dividing by 6 and 7.

Division is the inverse operation to multiplication.
What does inverse mean?

We can sometimes use the inverse to check our answers. An inverse operation can almost ‘undo’ a sum, it is almost like the opposite operation. So the inverse of addition is subtraction.

Let’s look at the question below:

The question is asking us to divide 24 by 6
24 ÷ 6 =

We can use our times tables to help us.
How many times does 6 go into 24? (0, 6, 12, 18, 24…)
So,  24 ÷ 6 = 4

Now look at this next question:

There are 20 cupcakes altogether so the question is asking us to divide 21 by 7.

Sometimes, you might find it easier to draw it out:

By drawing the 7 boxes, you can draw each cupcake and cross it off as you go, sharing them equally.
When you have shared out all of the cupcakes, check to see there is the same number in each box.
If there is, that means the number divided equally with no remainders.
How many cupcakes are in each box?

3. So…

21 ÷ 7 = 3

Fancy a challenge?
