Well done for all your adding yesterday! 🙂

One of the most common things we have to work out with money is the change. Change is the amount a shop keeper gives back to you if you pay too much for something. For example, if something costs £8 and you pay with a £10 note, you will get £2 back. What would the number sentence be for this?

Hopefully, you said: 10 – 8 = 2

Have a look at our In Focus task:

Here, it is not as simple as my first example because Charles has bought two things. So the first thing to do is to work out the total he spent (total is adding so, £25 + £65) and then we can take the total away from the amount he paid (£100 – £90) which will help us work out the change!

Work your way through Worksheet 9, carefully reading the questions so you know what to do!

Then, I’d like you to continue to practise working out the change by doing this BBC Bitesize lesson and the activities and games. There is even a song and dance to do!

Once you have finished the BBC Bitesize lesson, I have some more challenges for you to try! Not only do you need to work out the change, but also work out which coins Grace used!

  19. John and Rebecca says:

Hi Miss – we’ve done the worksheet, most of the BBC lesson and the challenges.

  20. Miss Carruthers says:

Well done! I’m impressed that you’ve done all three tasks! ⭐ ⭐

  21. I did the worksheet and the two challenges. I got 5p, 5p and 10p for the first challenge, and £1, 5p, 5p, 5p, and 50p, 50p, 10p, 5p for the second challenge. My whole family can’t think of a third way to do the second challenge using four coins. Except my Dad says you could have £1, 10p, 10p, 10p and owe the shopkeeper 15p. But is there another way?

  22. Miss Carruthers says:

I’m impressed that you managed to get your whole family involved, and I’m sure you’ve worked out that there are only two ways to solve it! (I just didn’t want to give the answers away too early..!) Well done for working through the challenge fully!

  23. I did the worksheet.
    challenge 1 = 10p 5p 5p
    challenge 2= 50p 50p 10p 5p

    Challenge 2: £2.00 – 85p = £1.15p
With 4 coins, the combinations are:
    £1, 5p, 5p, 5p
