Hello Class 1!

I was very impressed with your maths work last week! You are all SO hard-working and I know you are making Miss Travers very proud. Although she is at school and I am doing your blogs, Miss Travers tells me that she is looking at your work every day and she has been so pleased with your hard work! Keep it up!

Challenge:

At home, can you show how to make a half and quarters with some objects around your home. You could drink half of a glass of water or ask an adult to help you to cut your toast into quarters. Draw or send in some photos of the halves and quarters that you made at home!

Making Half and Quarters

We need to cut the paper into two equal pieces. That means we need to cut the paper in half.

Let’s look at an example question together…

The rectangle represents the whole. It has been split into 8 little pieces but we need to shade half of the whole rectangle.

There are 4 little squares on each half. Each half is equal!

How about quarters? When we share something into 4 equal parts, each part is a quarter.

There are different ways we could cut the cake into 4 equal parts:

These 4 pieces of cake are not the same size or shape so they are not equal. That means they are not quarters.
Let’s look at another example…

Remember, if we half something, it has been split into 2 equal pieces.
To make quarters we split something into 4 equal parts.
Equal means the parts have to be exactly the same amount.

Please ask if you need any help!
From Miss Lee 🙂
