Good Morning Year 2 – Happy Friday!

Click here for a printable version of today’s blog post:Friday Music printable

Last time we looked at music, you all loved listening to the different pieces of music and had some good reasons why you liked them. Maybe you liked the more dramatic ones, or the ones with certain instruments.

Click here to get onto the BBC ten piece website.

Today I would like you listen to some more music!

You could either:

Listen to some new pieces of music and explain why you like them.

Do you prefer them to other pieces? Why or why not? Do you like the instruments they use? Or is there a tune you like? Do you recognise the names of any of the composers?

Or you could:

Try and draw a picture to illustrate the music!

It sounds weird, but try to picture what the music looks like. If it is fast music, then maybe there are lots of quick marks and different colours to show this. If it is really dramatic, then maybe it is darker colours to show that, compared to lighter colours if it is quieter or gentler music. Maybe there is a big build up which you would draw with a big shape, or lots of different instruments which you can draw with different shapes to show each instrument.

Your artwork will be very abstract, and might just look like colours and lines rather than a ‘picture’ but that is okay as it is your version of the music! The best part is, there is no right or wrong way to do it – it is what you think the music looks like!

Write on the blog which piece of music you have listened to and your thoughts and opinions on it. Send in your pictures and write on the blog a description of why you chose different colours and shapes, as well as the piece of music that inspired it!

I listened to Symphony n°1 in E Minor by Florence Price. I like it. I chose orange, yellow, green, blue, pink, purple and black. I felt happy.

  2. Miss Carruthers says:

I’m glad you liked the music. You’ve chosen very happy colours indeed!

  3. Miss Carruthers says:

Thank you Jack for the explanation of your artwork:

I love Just Sing from the Trolls World Tour movie, it makes me happy and so I used lots of different colours for this funky song.

  4. I liked Trailblazers: Florence Price Symphony No. 1 in E minor (3rd mvt) on the left. I liked hearing about the composer’s story because it’s very interesting. I liked hearing about the obstacles she overcame in her life, and I also liked the animated hands, and how the presenter showed you how to make a rhythm with your hands on your body. Most importantly, the music itself was really catchy and bright, and I really enjoyed listening to it.

  5. Miss Carruthers says:

I’m so glad you enjoyed this piece of music. It is always interesting to hear about other people’s lives and can be inspiring to hear how the have overcome challenges.

  6. Miss Carruthers says:

I love your drawing Marisa! Which piece of music inspired it? I like the big arches of colours.

  7. I chose the music by Steve Reich because it is really full of energy, and it makes me feel exited.
The colours I chose are blue because it makes me calm down, red because it makes me feel powerful and strong, purple because it makes fell happy. I also used yellow because it makes me want to stretch.
I prefer this piece by Reich to other pieces because it has repeating patterns and it has a jumpy sound. I don’t like other pieces because they are less jumpy, and I like jumpy music.
I really like the instruments like keyboard and clarinets because they sound very clear.
There is a tune I really like with the hands clapping and I practiced it.

  8. Miss Carruthers says:

What a brilliant answer Marisa. You have obviously put a lot of thought into your artwork and listened carefully to the music.

  9. Sophia B says:

I like Shout out to My Ex by Little Mix.
I like it because they sing loudly and the tune is catchy.
I like it because they’re girls and they wear cool clothes.
You can dance to their songs.
    ??‍♀️?

  10. Miss Carruthers says:

I’m glad you like them Sophia. Did you listen to any of the music on the BBC link above?

  11. I liked Tchaikovsky’s Waltz of the Flowers from the Nutcracker. I liked it because it made me feel happy. It had a harp and lot of violins and those are some of my favourite instruments. I liked it as well because it went up and down and was bouncy just like me.

  12. Miss Carruthers says:

I’m so glad this piece of music made you feel so happy Nadine.

  13. I like Trailblazers: Delia Derbyshire because it feels like happiness and I feel like I heard it somewhere.

  14. Miss Carruthers says:

What a wonderful description! Now, if you hear it again, you’ll know what the piece of music is!

  15. Catherine says:

I listened to Symphony No. 1 in E minor by Florence Price. In my drawing, I used green, black, pink and yellow. I mixed the colours to show the feeling of chaos and danger. The music is energetic, uplifting and makes me feel happy.

  16. Miss Carruthers says:

Wow Catherine, what a wonderful description (feeling of chaos and danger). I’m glad you liked the music.

  17. I listened to Mars from the planets. I could hear cannons from the drums. The music gets louder. I think this means the war is getting more violent. At the end it feels like one of the army falls.

  18. Miss Carruthers says:

A brilliant description. I love how you have linked it to war and what the volume of the music might mean.

  19. Kristian says:

My sister and I listened to the finale of the ballet “Firebird” by Igor Stravinsky. I wanted to hear it because we have read the book before. Then we both copied the picture of the firebird from the internet in bright red and yellow. The music sounds like some other Eastern European and Russian music I heard. Sometimes it is quiet and peaceful and a bit scary like a dark forest, other times it is full of energy like fire.

  20. Miss Carruthers says:

How lovely to listen to a piece of music that inspired a book you have read! Or was it the book that inspired the music?

  21. Sophia P says:

I listened to Beethoven Symphonie No,6 F-Dur op.68 conducted by Carlos Kleiber: I used red, yellow, orange and blue. The music was about a storm. Picture to follow shortly.

  22. Miss Carruthers says:

Well done Sophia! I can’t wait to see your picture. I like how you have chosen such bright colours.

  23. The music by Jean Siblius and Gabriel Prokfiev were my favourite. In my pictures I have used different colours to show what the music looks like in my head.

  24. Miss Carruthers says:

Well done Joshua! Why did you choose those two colours?

  25. Miss Carruthers says:

    Message from Romey:

    Hi Miss Carruthers,
I really enjoyed my music lesson today .. the music reminded me of a beautiful sunrise. I chose George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue.
Have a lovely weekend. Love Romey xx

  26. Miss Carruthers says:

Thanks Romey! What a lovely thing to be reminded of, and very clever to use so much blue in your drawing. Hope you have a lovely weekend too.

  27. Gabriel says:

I listened to the Doctor Who theme song. it was scary and uncomfortable because the first part of the song had a chilling sound. The song is good and the way Delia Derbyshire made the theme was very cool and unique.

  28. Sophia B??‍♀️ says:

Yes I did, I like the chase because of the puddle splashing is like a water fountain⛲️
