A composer is a person who writes music, especially as a professional occupation. They are ‘authors’ of music!

Choose one of the composers and listen to the music.

Then, research some information on any one of the composers and post your opinion on the piece of music you have heard.

Did you like it? Why/Why not? How did it make you feel?

We look forward to reading your responses,

Mrs Avdiu & Ms Robertson

    Good morning everyone!
The composer I chose to listen to is Johann Sebastian Bach and the piece of music is called Toccata and Fugue in D minor.
I really enjoyed listening to it and I liked how it had so many instruments involved. I also liked how it suddenly changes from a high note to go to a very dramatic and low note.
This piece of music made me feel like it was telling a story of a man at sea and then suddenly a big storm comes and destroys his boat. When the boat is being destroyed there is sudden and loud note.

  2. Mrs Avdiu says:

Tommaso – how wonderful that this music told you a story. Music can definitely do that sometimes and many people have songs which remind them of special ‘stories’ or events in their life. Thank you for sharing this wonderful feedback.

  3. Claudia says:

Hello Mrs Avdiu, this is the composer I chose:

Johanes Brahms the 5th Hungarian Symphony

I liked it because it was lively, mysterious and active. It also really sends you on a move. I liked how it went to very loud to very quiet. The song sort of made me feel happy and grateful for what I have. What I didn’t like so much was that it was mostly only violins playing in their orchestra; there were some other instruments but not a lot.

  4. Mrs Avdiu says:

Thank you Claudia – it is wonderful that the music has made you feel grateful; so important right now! Thank you for sharing your feedback. Which other instruments would you like to have heard in that piece?

  5. I would love to have heard a harp or flute i think it would have sounded better.

  6. Mrs Avdiu says:

Oh, yes – I can imagine that sounding delightful!

  7. Edvard Grieg. In the Hall of the Mountain King from Peer Gynt

This is the composer I selected. I chose this folktale because my Dad has seen the play and said it was great. I really liked this piece as it had a nice fast tempo. At the start it was like a mouse creeping through a cat’s house and when the cat smells it, it starts to chase the mouse. At the end it sounds like something or someone gets caught. I read a summary of the story the music was composed for and it is about a boy being chased by trolls as he tries to escape an evil king.

    Have a nice weekend everyone.

  8. Mrs Avdiu says:

I really loved your analogy of the cat and mouse, thank you Ayako! I listened to this with the cat and mouse in mind and it really does sound that way! Have a lovely weekend 🙂

  9. Sebastiao says:

    Hi Everyone
This is the composer I chose to write about:

    Ludwig van Beethoven
Ludwig van Beethoven was born in a city called Bonn in Germany and was baptized in the same month. Beethoven was a famous music composer and pianist who was taught by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s teacher! He went deaf but no one could explain why and he created the famous Symphony No. 5 which he composed with no hearing. Beethoven is one of the most admired composers in the history of western music. His musical talent was obvious at an early age and he was forced to play piano by his father, Johann van Beethoven. Beethoven sadly died in Vienna aged 56 on the 26 of March 1827.

The song made me feel joyful as it is very strong and beautiful. You can tell that Beethoven was an amazing man as he composed Symphony No. 5 without hearing it.

  10. Mrs Avdiu says:

Thank you for sharing those wonderful facts with us. Yes, he truly was incredibly talented. To compose that without the gift of hearing is truly remarkable!

  11. Hi everyone I did this work with Seb I hope you learn something from it.

Me and Seb listened to Ludwig Van Beethoven, we listened to his famous Symphony Five. I liked this piece of music because it was very dramatic and full of fire.

Beethoven was born in Bonn, Germany in December 1770. He was baptised in the same year of when he was born. Sadly he died on the 26 March 1827 in Vienna at the age of 56.

He played classical music and one of his most famous piece was called Symphony Five. Beethoven was a composer and a pianist. When Beethoven was a child he was locked in a basement alone because his father wanted him to play piano. He was then taught by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s teacher.

He was 5 foot 4 inches tall. Beethoven created Symphony Five deaf. He now has his own museum in Bonn, Germany that you can still visit today.

    I hope you liked it.
    ~ Iggy

  12. Mrs Avdiu says:

Hi Iggy. I am happy to see you are talking on Skype and sharing your learning – this is wonderful! Thank you for your amazing facts. Why did you think it was ‘full of fire’? Can you explain this in more detail?

  13. Good morning Mrs Avdiu,
The composer that I chose is called Grażyna Bacewicz and she was Polish. The piece that she wrote piece is called Overture.
Grażyna composed this piece during the Second World War in 1943 and one of the main sequences is short short short long or • • • — which is V in morse code (the code that lots of people used in the Second World War). The V stands for victory and I think that Grażyna really wanted to emphasise the fact that there was hope for Poland that they would defeat the Nazis, and they did.
When the war ended there was a huge music festival in the city of Kraków and the first piece played was Grażyna Bacewicz’s Overture.
I really like this piece because, like Tommaso, I really feel like it’s telling a story where a country is at peace but then it gets invaded and people are forced to live harsh lives. At the end, another country comes to help and there is a massive battle in which the invaders are defeated. I think this is based on World War II where Poland is at peace and then the Nazis invade. In the end the Allied forces come to help and defeat the Nazis. It makes me feel energetic but It makes me feel energetic but calm at the same time.

  14. Mrs Avdiu says:

    Good morning, Zavan!
Thank you for sharing these wonderful facts.
I think ‘energetic’ is a great word to use – it’s remarkable how something can make us feel alive and calm at the same time.
    Have a lovely weekend 🙂

  15. Hi,
I chose to review No place like by Kerry Andrew.
I think we can all connect to the piece because each of us has home in this town or in this country or in this world. We all have connection. I enjoyed it, I liked the harmonies and the split parts as they sounded really nice together.
If you listened I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did.

  16. Mrs Avdiu says:

I really like the connection you made there Honeko, thank you!

  17. Good afternoon everyone.
The composer I chose to listen to was Ludwig Van Beethoven and the piece of music was called Symphony number 5.
I really liked this piece of music because it is very intense. It never let’s you stop to take a breath and it is very powerful and energising. I also like all the instruments that were used and you can the instruments in the orchestra very well. This piece makes me feel energised and alert. It is like two people having an argument, the quiet notes are when they are talking to each other and the loud notes are when they are shouting at each other.
    Have a great weekend everyone.??

  18. Mrs Avdiu says:

Hi Theo. Wow! Now that I’ve listened to it again, it really does sound like an intense argument. Thank you for sharing that wonderful comparison!

  19. Happy Friday everyone! I hope that you are all enjoying your day so far. The composer that I chose to listen to was Georges Bizet an.d the piece that I chose was Carmen Suite No. 2: Habanera. I really liked this piece as we are doing it in Orchestra and it is a really magical piece. I really like the way it gets very quiet and then gets really loud again. I enjoy listening to this while doing my homework. It made me feel lots of different emotions, the main ones are joy, a bit overwhelmed and excited. It is a amazing piece that I love.

  20. Mrs Avdiu says:

Thank you Elsa. I’m glad to know you have discovered this piece with the Orchestra! It’s lovely that you listen to that while doing homework, I think I’m going to try and do the same while I’m working from home 🙂

  21. Violette Thomas says:

    Hello everyone,
The composer I chose to listen, was Ludwig Van Beethoven, the composition was Für Elise who was one of his famous work. I really enjoyed this piece of music because when I closed my eyes I got carried away by the sound of the piano. Also, it made me think about my family because my grandma loves music and she put this music as the sound of her ring bell.
Have a good weekend everybody!! ??

  22. Mrs Avdiu says:

Thank you Violette! That’s right, music can definitely remind us of special people in our lives. Have a wonderful weekend 🙂

  23. Hi Everyone??.
The composer I chose was Johannes Brahms. Brahms came from a poor family and was sent to play piano at local inns, also he was influenced by folk and gypsy music .He was known for giving sweets to children on the streets and was a perfectionist. Also he was engaged to Agatha Von Siebold but then he decided to live the rest of his life alone while dying form liver cancer.

I think his music, the Hungarian No.5 is mysterious and interesting. Also I like how the music sometimes is more gentle and quiet and then loud and strong. I didn’t really make me feel emotions.

  24. Mrs Avdiu says:

Thank you Sara. When my son was a baby he loved listening to lullabies by Johannes Brahms! In particular the one called ‘Wiegenlied’ which you might recognise 🙂
