Time to get musical!

Click on the link below:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/ten-pieces/intro-films-and-orchestral-films/zv2gqp3

On the link you will find a vast variety of music composers, along with some video clips which allow you to listen to some of their music.

Pick one of these composers and do some research about them.

You can use a safer internet search engine like kidrex.com.

Write a paragraph or two about your chosen composer, telling me and the class what you have found out. Then write another paragraph about their music. What did you like about their music? Which instruments could you hear? How did the music make you feel? Which period in history do you think this piece of music was written in and why?

You can take this opportunity to be as creative as you like. You might want to play along to the music if you have an instrument at home. Or you could try to make your own instrument using recycled materials at home. Another idea is to listen to the music and create a piece of art which shows the mood that the music portrays.

Enjoy! I look forward to reading your paragraphs about your chosen composers and your thoughts about their music.

  4. It is incredible that some music was written so long ago and still listened to today! How did the music make you feel when you listened to it?

  5. Leonard Bernstein was a US composer, conductor and a pianist. He composed the music for the musical West Side Story. The music is very intense and lively. He used lots of different instruments such as flutes, piano, trumpets, drums and saxophones. I loved the trumpets and the saxophone the best.

  6. Very interesting! I played the saxophone when I was at school!
How did the music make you feel when you listened to it?

  7. One of the musicians that I know is Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. He was an Austrian classical composer. He then composed his first music at age 5. Today, he is widely considered as one of the most greatest composers in the history of western music. I love listening to his music because it makes me more focused on what I’m doing and it just makes me feel less bored.

  8. A lovely paragraph! Music is sometimes great for helping us to focus or relax!

  9. I really like the Theme tune to Dr who. Written by Delia Derbyshire.
My Grandpa worked in the same building as her and knew her.
They didn’t have computers back then, and they had to record the music on magnetic tape. To make the theme tune the piece of tape they used was so long, that they had to trail it all the way down the corridors which were 100’s of feet long.

They had to record somethings like machinery and trains.
I liked the music because it sounds spooky, mysterious and cool.

  10. Wow what an interesting paragraph William! Thank you for sharing all of that information with us! Wasn’t your Grandpa lucky to know such a talented musician!

  11. Heitor Villa -lobos was a brazilian
composer which was born the 5th of March 1887 in Rio de Jeaneio. He composed a song of a little train on a voyage to somewhere.
The song was called `the little train ’.
    Sadly,?he died.

All his songs were very fascinating and so outstanding. He’s a really famous composer.
This is the story of the little train:
A train was going to somewhere in full speed but like it was going to fast, it went slower and slower. The train didn’t want to stop.Suddenly, the train stopped.BOOM!
This was a big adventure for just a little train.
    WHAT A GREAT STORY !
    The end!

  12. Very interesting Stella! It is wonderful that music can also tell us a story about something!

  13. Excellent comments so far year 4! Hope you are all well.
Feel free to listen to a few of the pieces of music on the site (there are over 40 different ones on there) so you can compare them.

And think about how the style of the music changes over the years.
Pablo- you mentioned you liked the saxophones. Saxophones weren’t invented until 1846, which is why you’ll never hear any saxophones in the music of Mozart, Bach or Beethoven or any of the other composers who were writing before then

  14. Delia Derbyshire
In 1963 Ron Grainer ask Delia Derbyshire to create the doctor who theme song, but in the 1960s the only music was orchestras. But Delia Derbyshire had other ideas ?.

Delia Derbyshire used electric ⚡️ sounds to make this. This meant taping all the sounds (because in the 1900s there weren’t phones ?) and cutting them. This process took a long period of time.
When Ron Grainer heard Delian music he was amazed?.

    FEELING:
Even though today music ? is much better when I heard it I was amazed ? by the way the music sound!!!!

  15. Some brilliant research and writing Alfred! The Dr Who theme song seems to be a popular song in the class! 😀

  16. ??Emilie ?? says:

    Delia Derbyshire
created a whole new world and took music? to the next level !!! She used weird sounds and electronic⚡️ sounds and stuck pieces of tapes together and made one large tape it looked quite easy but it took a long time to take the right amount of tapes, and put hundreds of them together .

  17. Great research Emilie! How did the music make you feel?

  18. ?????????

Has anyone managed to create some art work linked to the music they listened to? Or even made their own instruments at home? If you have, ask your parents to send a photo to the school office. I can then post the photos on this blog for the class to see!

(I had some photos from the D&T task yesterday which I will put onto that blog now, make sure you have a look!)

  19. Hi everyone I am going to write about Beethoven.
He was born in Bonn, Germany.
His father who was a singer, he was the first music teacher of Beethoven. When he was still a child, Beethoven
became a travelling performer as he was already very talented. When he was a adult he became a really popular artist.

I chose his 5th symphony because it is my favourite. The meaning of his 5th symphony is the destiny is knocking at the door the meaning of this is because it sounds like someone is knocking at the door. The second meaning is that a yellow bird is tweeting, it is the pattern that the yellow bird makes. I forgot to say when people knock at the door they may do the rhythm of this symphony.
Now, I am learning to do the pattern of the 5th symphony.

  20. A great artist choice Martin! It is great that you are learning to do the pattern of the 5th symphony! Hopefully you can play it to us soon!

  21. Elisa?✨ says:

The music ? I listened to was swaying nice and calmly just like if I was at the beach ? in Hawaii. But towards the end ? the music ♪ sounded a bit more enthusiastic , jolly ☺ and joyful. It also was a little bouncy and it made me want to jump up and down in time to the music ?.
I really enjoyed this music ?.

  22. That is great to hear Elisa! Which piece of music did you listen to?

  23. Beethoven
He fell in love playing piano ? but his dad did not want him to.

  24. What an interesting fact!

  25. Delia Derbyshire

Delia Derbyshire was born on 5th May. She was successful in mathematics and music. She was a famous person because she was first to not use a orchestra for a film but use electronics. She used Ron Grainer’s notes and transformed them into reality. As the people heard the theme tune of Doctor Who for the first time they held their breath because they hadn’t ever heard this type of music before. Delia became famous because of this music.

  26. Wow lots of research! Well done!

  27. Florence.B.Price
Florence.B.Price already started performing the piano at the age of four. She was an African-American woman who was born in the southern United States in 1887.

What I liked about the music was that it showed we could make a song with our body like using our hands.

In the music video, I recognized the drum and the violin.

The music made me feel calm because the musicians were very talented and played the instruments very well.

  28. Hi Mr. Rees,

I have been practising the piano and the pieces that you have given me. I hope to have lessons with you again very soon.

At home, we listen to the Classical channel on the radio.
