Good Morning, Nursery.

I hope that you have had a lovely weekend.

Well done for your hard work in Maths last week. Today, we are going to practice using the language of ‘fewer.’

You need your number cards, two plates or bowls, two people and lots of food!

First get a plate or bowl for yourself and one for another person.

Take 4 items of food. Share the food, one piece at a time, so that each person has the same amount of food. Now, give one of your items of food to the other person so that you have fewer.

How many do you have?

How many do they have?

Use your number cards to show how many are on each plate.

Who has fewer/less?

Now try it with 6 items of food.

You can keep going with 8, 10,12, 14, 16 and 18 pieces of food.  Remember to try to use the language of fewer by saying who has fewer/less on their plate.

Maybe you could help to share out the food for your family at your next meal.

I am looking forward to hearing all about your Maths today.

Love from Miss Siswick.

PRINTABLE VERSION:N Maths Monday

It would really help me if you could upload photos  straight to the media file (instructions are here: sharing photos and files) as they get to me more quickly and easily as they don’t have to go via the office and my e-mail. Please can either your child’s name or face (but not both) be visible on any photos. Many thanks.

  1. Hello,
Grace shared out the items of food starting with 4, 6, 8 and so on to 16 items. She shared them out and we discussed which plate had fewer items and and also used the word less.
She is still playing with the food and plates 🙂

  2. Grace shared the items starting with 4, 6, 8 up to 16. We discussed which plates had fewer and used the word less. She found the correct number cards each time. She enjoyed sharing the items an is still playing with the food and plates 🙂

  3. We had lots of fun. James was further enticed by the reward of a kit kat the more he did. I am sending photos. He got all numbers right bar picking the 13 number card instead of number 12 but he realised when I asked him to look at it closer.

  4. Adelaide says:

Great game. Adelaide played all the way to 14 fruits. She found the game funny. I made her say who has fewer or more fruits every time. She managed to say the number of fruits without counting until they were four on each plates.

  5. Caspian enjoyed him self pretending to be a salesman . Every time we added more fruits and vegetables he counted them correctly up to 18.

He was excited that I had a fewer/less than him .

  6. Alexander says:

Alexander correctly counted the amount of fruits left after sharing them into the bowls. He matched the number cards and used the words ‘fewer and less’ to show the bowl which had fewer fruits. He had fun with the activity.

  7. Miss Siswick says:

Well done, everyone, for your wonderful Maths this morning. It sounds as if you have all been having fun with the food and also talking about who has fewer or less.

I am very sorry that I am replying so late this morning as I was phoning people at home. Hopefully, I will get to talk to each of you in the next few days. Love from Miss Siswick.

  8. Ania had a great time. She was 4,6,12. When she had 12 fruits, she finding the number. She practiced the words fewer / less.
    She counted and found numbers.

  9. Dear Miss Siswick,

Nicolas and Sophia enjoyed this game. He correctly counted the various items on the plates, found the corresponding number plates and told me who had fewer items correctly when I asked him.

    Greetings from us ?

  10. Miss Siswick says:

Well done, Nicolas and Ania. Great counting and using the language.

  11. Dear Miss Siswick
I did some counting with Miss Jones. We are at the hub. We didn’t have fruit so we used felt tips and shared them together. Fewer means less.

  12. Dear Miss Siswick,

Anna and Marie played together and Anna seems to understand the concept of fewer.

  13. Eloisa shared her toy food between Foofi the dog, Toothless the dragon, and Pingvi the penguin.

Food got 11 food items, Toothless got 10 and Pingvi 8.

Eloisa practiced saying “Foofi got the most food items, Toothless got more than Pingvi, Pingvi got fewer items than Foofi and Toothless got fewer than Foofi.”

  14. Aoife enjoyed playing the game and sharing out fruit on two plates. She was able to count the fruit on each plate and say which plate had less than the other. Thanks.

  15. Hello nursery,

Fiadh had fun playing this game with Saoirse. She understood fewer/less.

  16. Miss Siswick says:

Well done; Indigo, Anna, Eloisa, Aoife and Fiadh. You can all count carefully and say who has fewer or less food.

  17. Mrs Knowler says:

Well done all of you. You have grasped the concept of fewer and less quite quickly.
Looking at the pictures I think it might be National Kit Kat Day. I spoke to Mrs Lynch on the phone this morning and even she was eating one! Yummy.

  18. Victoire says:

    Hello,

Victoire likes this maths with the fruits and vegetables!

  19. Joseph & Sophia says:

Joseph and Sophia shared a variety of clementines, peaches and apples and although they ‘eventually’ managed to grasp the concept of fewer, they were more enthusiastic about eating them !

    🙂

  20. Miss Siswick says:

Well done: Victoire, Joseph and Sophia, I’m glad that you enjoyed eating your Maths work today!

  21. Nancy Bear says:

Philip likes it when mum has less and he has more! We had a good laugh playing the ‘less’ game.
