Have a look at the graph below which displays a set of results from an experiment.

What do the results show you? Can you draw a conclusion? What do you think the prediction may have been?

Please proof-read your response before submitting (check punctuation, spelling and grammar).

We look forward to reading your responses,

  1. Hello,
When I saw the graph it showed how different things -in this case water , soil and chemicals- affect the growth of a plant. From the graph I conclude that water does not decrease the height but it increases the height. I think the question the people who did the experiment asked themselves was, ‘What helps plants grow further?’ I think the prediction would have been that soil helps it grow the most as all over the world people use soil and it works perfectly in their opinion. The graph shows the average which is the soil, the height from the chemical treatment and the height from the water treatment.
The treatment that helped the plant grow tallest was the water, it’s natural. The chemical was not the best but was not worst, the chemical is man-made and not so good for the environment. Soil was the treatment that had the lowest height plant- but it is better than using chemicals.

Thank you Honeko for your very scientific response!

  3. 1. The graph shows that if you add water to a plant it grows the most and if you add soil to a plant it grows the least.

    2. My conclusion is that if you add water to a plant it grows 3.00 millimetres as if you add soil to a plant it grows 1.50 millimetres. So the best thing to add into a plant is water so your plant grows the most.

    3. My prediction would have been correct as I predicted that the water would make the plant grow the most.

Thank you Dylan for your valid prediction 🙂

  5. Hello everyone! These is my answers to the questions:

I think that the graph shows how different substances, in this case water, soil and chemicals, help the plant grow in different ways.
From what I can see on the graph, I conclude that water helps the plant’s growth increase.

I agree with what Honeko had said – the question, in my opinion, may have been: ‘ What helps the plant grow better?’ I would say that the graph predicts that water would make the plant grow the most. Plants need a lot of water, but not too much as that could possibly drown them. Plants also need soil so that they can grow. They need some chemicals, such as Oxygen, Carbon and Hydrogen. These chemicals help them thrive.

You can search up Bitesize, find your age and what KS you are at (e.g. KS1, KS2 or KS3) and then pick a category (science, maths,e.t.c.). I picked science and I listened and read some interesting facts about plants.

    Bye! ??

I’m very impressed with your logical explanation. Also, thanks for sharing your online reading!

Great predictions Yr 5 -well done!

  8. Hi,
The results of this graph shows that if a plant is treated with water the average growth is much higher than if it is treated with soil. I think this is because you need water more than food and a plant’s food is soil (well not exactly soil but the nutrients in the soil). The thing that surprised me was that the chemicals helps plants grow higher than soil does although this makes sense since you can modify chemicals. I think that the prediction made by the people who did the experiment was what makes a plant grow the highest?

    Super prediction Zavan!

  10. Hello!??

What I can see In this graph is that it shows that there are three different substances that will help the plant to grow, water, soil and chemicals. So my conclusion is that the water is the biggest contributor to help the plant increase in height, followed by chemicals which is followed by soil.?

With my experience with plants, I have found that they need lots of water, however, don’t water them too much for it can potentially drown them (something you wouldn’t want to do ?)

The second thing that helped the plant to grow is chemicals, however chemicals are not the healthiest thing you can give for a plant. (I agree with Honeko in this one) Since it is a man-made product, it is not only not natural but could also possibly kill the plant. Soil, although it is the last thing on the graph that will help the plant grow in height, is healthier than giving the plant chemicals.Plants need soil because it is a platform for them to sit on,(some plants don’t need a platform), collect water and get healthy nutrients.

Bye! Stay safe and keep exploring the world that lives in science!?

Thank you Ava for your very scientific explanation using a range of scientific vocabulary. I’m impressed!

  12. Hello everyone,
The graph is showing us the overall plant growth when different items are used (in this case water, soil, and chemicals). So that we are able to see which items help it grow more than others!

Firstly, we can see the graph shows the growth of the tallest plant had received the most amount of water compared to the other plants.
Secondly, we are able to see the amount of soil added to a plant does not really affect the growth of a plant as it had the smallest growth on the graph.
Finally, we can see that adding chemicals to a plant does help as we are aware that certain chemicals do help a plant grow faster or taller (but it is better to naturally let it grow).
I hope to see you guys soon and stay safe!
