There are so many different species of plants and they have lots of different types of leaves.

Can you describe the differences between some of these leaves? Think about how you could describe some of the shapes.

You might have to look very closely to notice some of the smaller differences.

If you have any plants at home, can you describe the leaves on that plant? Are they the same or different to these leaves?

Rex’s plants that he has been growing.

Ash: It has little pairs of leaves on the sides.
Aspen: has lines going up and down and all around like a tree.
    Elm: has little trimmed edges.
Hazel: a bit like the elm but has bumpy edges as well.
Holly: it has really spiky edges on its leaves. The soldiers put it on Jesus head for his crown on Good Friday.
    Larch: it grows like fireworks.
Maple: it has five parts to its leaf.

  2. The holly leaf and the maple are different because the holly leaf is dark green and the maple leaf is light green. The maple leaf and the holly leaf are different because the holly leaf is shaped like an
ovale and the maple leaf isn’t. The maple leaf ? is wider than the holly leaf ?.

    Greetings,
    Sophia

Hello Year 2, when I was young I loved collected leaves! In botany, the science of the study of plants, these leaves are called SIMPLE, except for the ash one that is COMPOUND as it is divided in more leaves.

  4. Elm and hazel are similar but hazel is a bit different because hazel is pointier then elm. Holly is different from maple because holly is shaped like an oval and the colour is a darker green than maple, which is light green and is shaped a bit like a snowflake.

Ash is different from larch because larch has dark green leaves sitting on the stick and the leaves on the stick are a bit pointy while ash has seven bright leaves. Aspen is a round and fat leaf that is bright.

  5. Ash= It has two green leaves on the two opposite sides of the leaf
Aspen= It is a round and curvy leaf
Elm= It has short spiky sides all around
Hazel= It is like the elm leaf but with less spiky sides
Holly= It is dark green and has curvy sides
Larch= It has long green lines poking up from a twig
Maple= It has many sides with spikes on them

Ash looks like a flower and is made of lots of leaves
    Aspen is fat
    Holly is spiky
    Elm has jagged edges
Hazel is like the elm but darker and pointing the other way
Larch is growing on a stick and looks strange
Maple looks like the Canadian flag?

  7. Kristian says:

Aspen looks like a tear drop turned upside down. Maple looks like a star fish and like a flag of canada. Larch looks like a spiky ball.

Holly, elm and hazel are more elongated. Holly has prickly edges. elm has edges that look like a bread knife. Hazel has very symmetrical veins .

  8. Catherine says:

Ash: Ash has seven leaves on one stalk.
Aspen: Aspen is one big leaf with no points on the sides and only one point at the top.
Elm: Elm is one dark and light leaf. It has little bumps going up and down in a pattern.
Hazel: Hazel is dark and bland with dark lines which I can see.

Holly: Holly is a dark leaf and a bit shiny in colour.

Larch: Larch is light and dark. It has so many leaves which are pointy.

Maple: Maple is a pointy leaf. It has a big leaf and points on all its sides.

  9. Ash – light green, 7 leaves on a long stem,opposite arrangement.
Aspen – simple arrangment, heart shaped, has veins. Elm – short stem, toothed edge, netlike veins.
Hazel – spear shaped, dark green, has veins.
Holly – very dark green, spiky edges.
Larch – whorled arrangement , needle shaped.
    Maple-hand shaped, lobed edges.

  10. Hi Miss,
The ash, the aspen, the hasel, the elm, the holly, the larch and the maple all have a different colour green. Some are dark green and some light green. Some of the leaves are spiky and some of them are not spiky. The ones which are spiky are called holly and maple. The other ones are not spiky and they are called Ash, Elm, Larch, Aspen and last is Hasel. The shapes are also different because some are round and others are needles and you have small and big leaves.
    Thanks, Bo

  15. Miss Coleman says:

    Dear Year 2,

I must tell Mrs Duffy and Mrs Robinson to look at the great responses on this Blog. Well done! Both teachers loved teaching you Science but Mrs Robinson used to love collecting leaves as part of her Science lessons!

    Take care,
    Miss Coleman

Rex has been working hard at home to grow some of his own plants. Look at his photos in the blog above!
Rex – your little red flower is gorgeous and I love the bright yellow in the middle. You’ve taken a wonderful close up photo of those leaves, it looks like a professional photo!
I wonder if anyone knows the name of this flower?
