Good Morning Year 2!

Click here for a printable version of this blog post: Thursday Science printable

In our Science this term, we will be starting a new topic all about Materials.

Everything around us is made of lots of different materials, and each of these materials have different properties. Materials are either natural or man-made.

Click on this link to read about the different properties that materials have: Materials properties

Today you are going to do your own investigation. I want you to find 6 objects from your house that are made of different materials. Try to pick objects that are made from one (or mostly one) material.  Use this table to ask questions and fill in your answers:

Click here for a pdf of the table, if that is easier to print: material investigation

Using the results in your table, you’ll now be able to write descriptive sentences about the different materials. Such as:

Metal is cold to the touch, hard, shiny and makes a ringing sound when tapped.

See if you can write your own sentences for:

Metal, wood, plastic, fabric, paper, wool, pottery

If you can‘t find objects in your house, or want to do some more, then have a go at this virtual experiment. Click on 1C: Sorting and Using Materials and have a go. There is even an extension you could try as well.

Send in some photos or drawings of the objects you investigated and your table. You can write your sentences about the materials on the blog below.

Have fun investigating!
