Good morning, Year 5!

Each week we are posting a Big Question to discuss for our topic of ‘Film’. These questions often require a lot of thinking and discussing, so talk to your family and talk to your friends on the blog. Other people’s answers might make you think about something else.

This week’s Big Question:

Are films or books better?

In your Home Learning book you could first brainstorm advantages and disadvantages of watching films/reading books and then reply in the comments section; taking into consideration both sides of the argument and using persuasive language.

Please proof-read your response before submitting (check punctuation, spelling and grammar).

We look forward to reading your responses,

Mrs Avdiu & Ms Robertson

  1. I think that films and books are equally good as they help you to understand what is going on. Films go into more detail than books however books are still fabulous for giving you the opportunity of imagining whatever you want.

  2. Ms Robertson says:

I like watching films because my hands are free to eat popcorn ?

Books require you to use your imagination. Good authors use great descriptive language that can literally take you into the book itself, also once you get to know the characters within a book, it can feel like you actually know them.
However, watching a movie can be a sociable experience that can be shared amongst family and friends at the same time.

  3. Mrs Avdiu says:

Good points! That’s interesting you say that because I actually think books go into more detail than films – they give us more insight into the character’s thoughts and feelings, don’t you think?

  4. I think that books are better because when you read, you are learning spelling, punctuation and grammar which help you to communicate. Although some books don’t have pictures, they help you use your imagination more. Even if movies have sound and moving pictures, movies are shorter than books, so books can fit more detail.

  5. Ms Robertson says:

Good point Gabi, reading regularly certainly improves ones ability to to become a better writer!

  6. Mrs Avdiu says:

That’s true- unless you watch a film with subtitles! Ha!

  7. Hello everyone! I hope that your day has been good so far!
This is my answer for today’s task:

I think that books are as good as films as both go into description about what is happening and is going to happen.

I enjoy reading books as they help me calm down if I am stressed or angry. They also help me with my reading skills.

I enjoy watching films because I usually read so I enjoy having a little rest and letting other people do the reading job(usually in film someone tells the story e.g. the narrator) It also helps as some movies are based on life-situations so it is good to know what to do if you get into a similar situation.

    Have a nice day!

  8. Mrs Avdiu says:

That’s very true – watching films is more passive and I think both are great ways to unwind after a stressful day.

  9. I think films are better than books because films go into more detail than books ?. Also you can have a trip out to the cinemas to watch a film. I like action films so I like it when they show the movement of the action scene as books can’t show that. Films are also better than books as you can watch it with your family. A book you can’t read with your whole family as it becomes a bit tricky especially with a family as big as mine. It also may help you to understand the story more easily as you hear what they say and theit movement alongside it.

  10. Mrs Avdiu says:

Yes, Dylan- films are more social and can be watched by many. Reading is done alone. Very good argument. Films do tell a story and often require comprehension skills just like books do. What’s your favourite film?

  11. Hello Everyone
I hope your day has been amazing ?

I prefer reading books this is because the book is originally what the author wrote and in films they may skip out important information.
I really like books because they create suspense and build up lots of tension.

  12. Mrs Avdiu says:

Good points. Can films be successful in building tension too?

  13. I prefer films more than books because I find them more exciting like it’s actually real but in books it’s more original ,and watching a film is easier .Also I like watching a film with my family.

  14. Mrs Avdiu says:

That’s right Sara, films are more passive and can be shared with others 🙂

  15. Hello everyone ,
I hope you are all right today!

For my opinion, books are different from films even though both are telling a story, but with a different way.
One is composed by images moving and people talking. Books let you imagine the people and where they are & live, like a dream. So, I think books and films are equal because they let you know what is going on. Films are more detailed than books because you see the whole image, but with books you can imagine whatever you want!
Then, I think both are great, and we can mix the pleasure of both!
    🙂

  16. Mrs Avdiu says:

    Interesting points!

  17. Mrs Knowler says:

Hi Year 5. I had to join in this conversation.
I think it varies. I love films and books equally. Usually the book is better because there is much more scope for detail and background information. This can be missed by cramming a whole book into the length of a film. However, if a film director is very good they can manage to convey the whole book in a short time. Occasionally a book and film will match and be just as good as each other.
It also depends on the order. If you watch a film first, the book may be disappointing, and vice versa.
On that note I am now going to choose a film to watch while I am eating my lunch later.

  18. Mrs Avdiu says:

I think I feel the same as you Miss!

  19. Hi ,
I think everybody has a valid point .
A few reasons why I feel books are better .
Although sometimes I also enjoy watching films , books improve your grammar and writing and reading skills . They help you when you need inspiration for a story .
I think that they are a much better pass time than watching a screen all day long .
Books improve your imagination, they include you in the story, you feel (with your imagination ) like you are there .
Some people have mentioned that you can’t socialise with a book but really you can . You can talk about a book , share opinions , you could read a book with someone or like myself you could go to a book club where you recommend and read books together.

  20. Mrs Avdiu says:

Fantastic points- yes books can indeed be social. Some people even listen to audio books with family in the car 🙂

  21. I think that even though films are a great invention, books are better. There are a few reasons why I think this: firstly the book usually came first. By this I mean that when movies come out they are normally based on a book so the book is the original idea. Secondly films are bad for you, it’s the same as looking at an iPad or phone all day, it’s just bad for your brain. Thirdly reading increases your knowledge of punctuation, grammar, spelling and everyday things. When you read you learn, it’s as simple as that. Finally movies can give you nightmares and even if books are scary you don’t see it so you don’t have images of scary things in your mind so you can still sleep.
    ? > ?

  22. Mrs Avdiu says:

Some very persuasive points. Could you find a study that could back up your point of ‘films being bad for you’? This would make your argument more convincing.

  23. Ms Robertson says:

    Hi Zavan.
You have made some good points – I totally agree that film images can give you nightmares, that’s why it’s so important to follow the age restriction guidance. However, I tend to agree with Mrs Knowler’s blog on this topic. Unfortunately I have read all of the books on my book-shelve, and have no choice at this time, to purchasing and reading a book from my Kindle.
