Welcome, Year 5!

Each week we are going to post a Big Question to discuss for our Religious Education topic of ‘Sacrifice’. These questions often require a lot of thinking and discussing, so talk to your family and talk to your friends on the blog. Other people’s answers might make you think about something else.

This week’s Big Question:

What helps you to resist temptation?

Include examples of when you have had to resist temptation. Try to include scripture in your answers by making links to the time Jesus resisting temptation.

Here is a reminder of what this special time of Lent is all about: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/ztkxpv4/articles/z77jf4j

Please proof-read your response before submitting (check punctuation, spelling and grammar).

We look forward to reading your responses,

Mrs Avdiu & Ms Robertson

  1. Mrs Avdiu says:

When I think of Jesus and how he resisted temptation in the desert (Matthew 4:1-11) it really gives me strength to do the same. What about you?

  2. SACRIFICE

I also get strength to folllow in the footsteps and the examples Jesus set out for us .
I find it so inspirational hearing about how after his baptism , Jesus being guided by the Holy Spirit
set out into the wilderness for the 40 days and 40 nights leading up to Easter to pray and prepare for His ministry . When I think about how challenging it must have been for Him I feel that with His help I can resist any temptation . Jesus trusted in God and knew that He was watching over Him just like how I know God is watching over me .
I think that the most diffficult thing for Jesus must have been being tempted by the Devil but each timr He resisted like when he told Jesus to turn rocks into loaves of bread and in return Jesus said
‘ Man cannot live on bread alone ‘ or when the Devil took Jesus to the highest peak of the highest temple and told Him throw yourself off the temple , go on God’s angels will save you ‘ Do not put
your Lord , the God to the test’
This makes me feel that with God by my side I can resist any temptation …
Times when I am tempted to do wrong are usually when I am mad and I take it out on others , my parents for example after sinning I regret it so the next time I think of doing it I remember just how sorry I felt and try as I might not to do it again .

A very thoughtful response with great links to scripture. Thank you, Lavinia!

  4. When I feel tempted to do something I feel that when I meditate it really helps me to calm down and think about how Jesus resisted and that I should too.

  5. Mrs Avdiu says:

Meditating really calms me down too Elsa.

  6. Ms Robertson says:

    Hi Elsa
Meditation is a great way to calm down and reflect. I could see during our daily class meditation that you have mastered this skill, well done!

  7. Sebastiao says:

When I open my heart to God and pray, it helps me to resist temptation because I feel connected to God. I also feel like I can trust God in every way (Proverbs 3: 5-6). I have had to resist temptation not to break my lenten promises and prayer has helped me.

  8. Prayer is very powerful indeed! What is your favourite prayer?

  9. Ms Robertson says:

    Hi Sebastiao
Well done for resisting temptation and keeping up with your Lenten promise so far!

  10. When I am stressed or I am feeling tempted dancing always helps me to clear my head and also helps me think straight.
I also do a little bit of yoga/meditation so I can calm myself down.
When I am feeling tempted I always think about what Jesus would do resist the temptation is the most obvious thing that Jesus would do.
I also think about how that choice would affect me in the future.

  11. Mrs Avdiu says:

Dancing is a great stress reliever! I hope everyone finds some time to dance while they are at home 🙂

  12. Good evening everyone ,
When I feel tempted,I try to look somewhere else and think of Jesus in the desert for 40 days and 40 nights with the Devil (Mathew 4:1-11) and then after ,I try to think about how will my choice will affect my life in the future . Jesus trusted God in the desert so if He can do it, anyone can try and follow in His footsteps . Anyone had at least been tempted once by the Devil and also resisted the Devil .

  13. Mrs Avdiu says:

That’s right, Violette. We can all follow in his footsteps!
