Is there anything better than finding a good book: the sort of book you just can’t put down; one that you race home from school for because you can’t wait to find out what happens next? One of the things I love about being a teacher is that the job introduces me to amazing books I may never have found otherwise. The question is though, how do you find a book like that?

I have just the answer: recommendations!

You know what they say, “Never judge a book by its cover!” Why not instead judge a book by other people’s opinions of it? Ask your friends and family what they are reading. If they’ve got a great book that had them enthralled, I guarantee they’ll be excited to share it with you.

Once you’ve exhausted all options from friends and family, check out online book reviews – another great way for people to recommend books. They should tell you what sort of genre the book is, what it’s about/what happens, what they like about it/dislike about it etc. You might not share the same opinion as the reviewer but it’s a good starting point if you’re looking for your next book.

For a really good website with book reviews check out https://toppsta.com

On this blog, I’d like you to write a short book review about a book you’ve really enjoyed (book reviews can be as long or as short as you want to make them!) so we can inspire others to read the same book and take as much pleasure from it as you have. Tell us what the book is about, what happens (without giving away any spoilers!), why you liked it and what you think could have been better. Ending with a star rating would be really useful too. If you want any help writing a short review, the following website gives you suggestions for how to write a book review: https://www.booktrust.org.uk/books-and-reading/tips-and-advice/writing-tips/writing-tips-for-teens/how-to-write-a-book-review/#!?q=&sortOption=MostRecent&pageNo=1

Happy book reviewing!

  1. I would recommend the Harry Potter series, because it is very gripping and hard to put down. It is funny, exciting and sad at points, and, unlike other stories, things don’t always go Harry’s way, so you can never predict what will happen next. J.K Rowling is also amazing at making very boring things very exciting, so there is never a boring page!
    My review:
Harry Potter is a 12-year old orphan who lives with his horrible aunt and uncle. He is absolutely miserable, until he receives a letter telling him that he has a place at Hogwarts school of witchcraft and wizardry! He spends his seven years there defeating evil wizards, making new friends (and enemies!), taking exams, and finding out new things about himself along the way!
I would rate this book a 10/10. I spent ages trying to fault this book – I failed!

I have read many books ! But my favourite – by far – has to be ‘ONE OF US IS LYING’.
‘ ONE OF US IS LYING ‘ is a murder mystery.
The reason why I love it so much is because each chapter it goes into first person from one of the witnesses of the murder.
The author of this book is called Karen M.Mc manus.
There are also four more of these books :
    ONE OF US IS NEXT
    TWO CAN KEEP A SECRET
    THE COUSINS
YOU’LL BE THE DEATH OF ME
Im going to get these ones soon and i can’t wait to read them !
This book is about a murder is detention!
There are quite a few pages – 358 pg!

  3. Title: Sophies lucky!
Its about a young small girl who has a puppy, cat and a bunny. but she still really wants a horse and is very detemerined.Sophie has a big surprise at the end of the story. I rate this 5/5 its a brilliant story!

I read a book recently called the girl of glass by Holly Webb. It was about a girl called Mariana who was the daughter of a glassmaker. But when her sister Eliza dies her father manages to catch her last breath in a piece of glass. He puts the piece of glass inside a glass doll which enables it to sing dance and talk just like Eliza. Mariana and the doll then have lots of adventures together. I found this book fascinating and I wouldn’t change anything . My rating would be ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ stars.

  5. Title : Two can keep as secret
I have just started to read it but so far I think it is a a really good book it is also 1 of the books from the series of one of us is lying and one of us is next. The novel begins with the twins finding the body of Mr. Bowman, a high school teacher who was killed in an apparent hit-and-run accident. After being interviewed by an Officer Rodriguez, the twins go to a charity event honoring Lacey.
I would rate it a 💯 I would recommend the age 10 and up.

Title: Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone
    Author: J. K. Rowling
This book is about a young boy called Harry and he is a wizard. In the first book it is all about him going to Hogwarts ,the school , and becomes friends with people. There is also a guy called Voldemort and he is trying to get the the Philosopher’s stone that can make anyone immortal but Harry stops them.
    I think it deserves a 10/10

My book is “FURY OF THE VIKINGS” by Dominic Sandbrook. This book is very informative about famous Anglo-Saxons and Vikings. It has twist and turns with a battle every 5 minutes. Whichever Viking or Anglo-Saxon is mentioned it always starts with the first tale or legend we know about them and develops from there. It is interesting and exciting to read with my dad. I rate it 10/10.

I would recommend mortal engines which is about moving cities eating each other.
A boy called Tom is thrown out of his city into the earth ground which is very ,very ,
    very dangerous.
I would rate this book 9/10 because sometimes it is a bit confusing because if you stop reading it for a bit you forget the names of people.
There a lot of people included.🤣

I would recommend a book called ‘ The Secret School Invasion’ by Pamela Butchart. It is mainly about a group of friends named Izzy ,Jodi ,Zach and Maisie. On a normal school day, their arch enemies from another school joined their school . After that many crazy things happened. They even went undercover for a secret mission. This is great for developing readers who want laughter , shock and school drama. I would not change anything about this book. My rating would be 10/10.

I have recently been reading a book called Boy by Ronald Dahl. Boy is a book about some key and funny events of the childhood of Ronald Dahl. It includes a clever mouse-plot and strict teachers. I think that it’s a hilarious book and rate it 10/10.

I would recommend the book ‘Charlottes Web’ by E.B. White. This book is about a girl who lives on a farm and takes care of a young pig that she names Wilbur. One day, her father sells the pig to the girl’s uncle. In the uncle’s barn, Wilber meets Charlotte who saves Wilbur when he finds out he is being raised for slaughter. I liked this book because the animals worked together to save Wilbur. I would give this book a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ star rating.

11-year-old Ben (Reece Buttery), who lives in Basildon, visits his paternal grandmother’s (Julia McKenzie) house every Friday afternoon while his parents go out dancing.

  13. Julian y5 says:

Harry Potter and the chamber of secrets
It’s a very gripping book and it makes several sinister twists and turns and beautifully described so you know what is happening while you still don’t know what is going to happen next.

  14. I would recommend The Last Bear because it’s a great story. It has emotional twists and lots of feeling in it ! (mainly the main character April Wood) It does take a bit of time to get stuck into the book . But it is a very very good book! In 3 words I would describe the book as conservation, relationships and adventurous!
