This half term Year 5 will be travelling back in time to explore one of the most fascinating and influential civilisations in history… Ancient Greece!

We will begin by building on what we already know about ancient civilisations and placing Greece on a historical timeline. From there we will uncover how Ancient Greece began and why many historians believe it had such a powerful impact on the development of Europe and the modern world.

As we move through the topic we will explore the world of the Ancient Greeks in depth. We will discover their beliefs in many gods and goddesses and compare the very different lives and values of two powerful city states Athens and Sparta. We will also become historians using artefacts to investigate what they can tell us about the past. Along the way, we will explore the amazing achievements of the Classical Golden Age including ideas in science, architecture, democracy and the arts that still influence our lives today.

Our learning will then take us into the world of philosophy where we will meet great thinkers such as Socrates Plato and Aristotle and explore how their ideas helped shape thinking across the world.

At the end of the topic we will answer our big question: Why is Ancient Greece considered to be so influential to the modern world

Before we properly begin our learning, I would love to know what you already know about Ancient Greece and what you are most curious to find out.

  • What do you already know about Ancient Greece and what would you like to find out as we begin this topic?
  • What do you think life was like for children in Ancient Greece and how might it compare to your own life today?
  • Why do you think Ancient Greece is considered such an important civilisation and what can we still learn from it today?

1.I have read lots of Greek myths and I love their scene of the arts and culture and I know that the Greeks had lots of wars with Persia and they worshiped lots of different Gods. I would love to learn about the things they created during their history.

What do you think life was like for children in Ancient Greece and how might it compare to your own life today?

Boys were educated for military life from age seven, while girls learned skills for the house . For education they learned things like music, literature, and physical fitness, I also know that they played with toys like dolls, yo-yos, and knucklebones. Today we also play with things like yoyos and dolls today .

Why do you think Ancient Greece is considered such an important civilisation and what can we still learn from it today?

Ancient Greece was considered as an important civilisation because lots of amazing scientists like Sosigenes of Alexandria and they had an amazing culture .They also invented the lyre and the theater

  7. I think ancient greece is is important for civilisation today as during this time, lots of things were invented that we still use today such as candles on cake!

  8. I know about what food they ate. They ate grapes and pita bread and hummus. i think the life then was harder then now because they didn’t have stuff that we have today like phones to text

One thing I know about Ancient Greece is that they worshipped many different Gods, including:
Athena-Goddess of wisdom and strategic warfare
Hades- God of the Underworld and the dead
    Ares-God of war and combat
    Artemis-God of nature
Zeus-Ruler of the Gods and the God of the Sky, Thunder, Law and Justice

I think that children in Ancient Greece would have to start education from an early age but they also played with toys like dolls, rattles and hoops.

I think Ancient Greece is considered an important civilization because it made an impact on how we think today. They also invented philosophy and democracy.

  10. Hermine Year 5 says:

Something I already know about Ancient Greece is that they worshipped many gods and the king of the gods was Zeus.He had a wife called Hera and many children who were gods.Athena was the goddess of war and Hades was the god of the Underworld.
Something I am excited to learn about this term is more about Greek gods and goddesses and more about Greek arcitechture.

I think children living in Ancient Greece life was much different to ours as they wouldn’t all go to school and they wouldn’t play the same games as we do today.

I think Ancient Greece is an important civilisation to us today because we got a lot of modern day things from them such as the Olympic Games.

    1. I know that there are many Greek Gods such as Artemis, Zeus ,Athena ,Poseidon and more. The Greeks were very smart people who invented things such as the yoyo and the vending machine . They even came up with the first play. I would like to find out how many Gods there are.
2.l think that Greek children would have to help with daily activities around the house.l know that girls don’t go to school but boys do. Boys have there own whipping boy if they misbehaved . ln Sparta boys would also be rewarded for things like bullying and stealing food whereas now we would be punished for that.
3.l think the ancient Greeks are a very important civilisation because they invented many wonderful things and they are a very important part of history . We can learn so much from them like why did they worship so many Gods. lt is a extremely fascinating period of time .

  12. Florence Y5 😃 says:

I know that the Greeks worshipped many different Gods , one of the most famous ones are Zeus. I would like to find out if the Greeks and Romans worshipped the same or different Gods and what currency they used to buy things.

I think children in Ancient Greece had to work to make things like bread or work in the house and probably were poorly educated. Today we can relax , go to school and be really active.

I think ancient Greece is important because they built lots of landmarks and places for tourists to see like Parthenons. I think we learn it today because they worked very differently to us now.

  13. Alda Year 5 says:

I also loved to try the olives , feta , and tzatziki . I also loved to try draw the Parthenon with my friends whilst eating some amazing Greek food .Thank you to all the teachers who helped organise this .

  14. I am really looking forward to our topic of Ancient Greece. I know most myths about Ancient Greece and its mythology but within this topic I would like to delve deeper inside its culture and real facts about Ancient Greece. I would like to learn more details and small things. I believe that life for children in Ancient Greece would depend on whether you were rich or poor, a slave or free as rather wealthy children would live quite happily with each and every need attended to while if you were poor life would be a constant struggle. As a slave, pain is something that you should learn to live with, while being free would also be difficult as people had to do all they could to please their Gods. I think Ancient Greece is still considered important as it can teach us so much even today! So thank you for giving us this unique opportunity.

  15. I think life for children in Ancient Greece depended on which city they live in.In Athens I think children get a good education but in Sparta children have to train to be soldiers from a very young age.I think compared to today Sparta’s treatment of children would seem very brutal and children from Athens would have a more ordinary life compared with today.I already know that in Ancient Greece they worshipped lots of different gods such as Zeus, king of the gods and god of lightning,Ares god of war and Poseidon god of the sea.The Ancient Greeks had lots of different myths about heroes and villans such as Heracles,a hero ,Serbureus, a three headed dog,and King Euresthyeus, a servant to Hera Zeus’ wife.I would like to find out about wars between the Greeks and against other countrys.
