In Year 2, we have been learning about computer science. We have been using JIT Turtle to give commands to an on-screen object. We know from our previous learning in computing that a set of instructions is known as an algorithm. Our learning about commands and programming linked nicely to our learning in maths about position and direction as we used key vocabulary such as ‘forward’ and ‘backwards’. We also tried to use ‘left’ and ‘right’. When we looked at the example together, we noticed that if we remove some of the commands, the program does not behave in the way that we expected because of mistakes, or bugs. We learned that we can fix this problem by ‘debugging‘ the program.

We then had a go using a different template to write our own program so that the spaceship visits one or more planets and then returns to the moon. We had to think about any difficulties that we faced and considered how we could make sure the moon landed the right way up. We then tried some simple coding using a range of different templates on JIT.

We really enjoy being able to use this software and look forward to creating a range of our own programs that allow our spaceship to explore different planets which will help us to understand simple coding even more!

I was telling my mum all about learning to command the computer to set of instructions which is known as an algorithm. I see this pattern in many games I play.

I love when we get to go coding! I remember on our first week of year 2 we were learning about algorithms. This lesson was so much fun!
