This week in Maths Year 4 have been focusing on identifying lines of symmetry and completing symmetrical figures.

On Thursday we learnt that symmetry means when a shape has two matching sides which look exactly the same, just like a mirror image.

Using mirrors, the class worked to find whether a rectangle would like a diagonal line of symmetry by using mirrors. We found out that rectangles only have 2 lines of symmetry and this can not be diagonally across the shape. We then looked at other types of shapes including triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons and octagons and working out how many lines of symmetry they had. The children challenged themselves by trying to name each shape. In our work the children identified lines of symmetry in flags and different shapes, and then sorted shapes into categories based on their properties (such as if they were regular or irregular shapes and whether they had 4 or more lines of symmetry or less).

During Thursday’s lesson we thought about how to complete symmetrical shapes. We used mirrors again to check where we should draw our reflections, used our rules to carefully measure the sides of shapes and then named each shape after we had drawn it. As a challenge Year 4 tried to complete 6 sides of an octagon shape without any squares!
