Nursery’s current Religious Education topic is Advent – Birthdays: Loving.

We have been thinking about Birthdays, and how special they are to each person. We thought about the fun ways we celebrate our birthdays. Everyone loves their birthday, but we have been focusing on the most special birthday of all – Christmas! Nursery learnt that Jesus was born on Christmas day. We thought about how Jesus’ birthday was the first ever Christmas, and what a special event this was. We thought about how when a baby is born, that day is their birthday! We looked at a photo of a family preparing for a new baby, and a family preparing for Christmas. We talked about the time we prepare and wait for Christmas is called Advent.

We had a special circle time, talking about why we celebrate Jesus’ birthday, and how we are so lucky to receive presents on Christmas Day and our birthdays – Jesus’ birthday and our own! Each child decorated their own special birthday present, and discussed how they celebrate their own birthday, thinking about how it is different to how Jesus’ spent his birthday when he was born in a stable.

Nursery learnt about the Advent wreath, the  four special candles on the wreath and when they are lit each week in Church – the white candle being the most important, and is lit on Christmas Day. We then created our own Advent candle! Nursery took extra care with this task, using purple cellophane to decorate their purple candle. Purple is our ‘getting ready’ colour, symbolising Advent, and the colour for this time in the Liturgical year.  The children also loved using glitter to decorate the flame. After this, Nursery thought about Advent, the time we wait and prepare for Jesus. We want to be like Jesus, and follow his footsteps with kindness and love. We thought about who we will help during Advent, and each child was able to say who they will help and why.

These will be our Advent promises! Well done Nursery!
