Art week this year had the theme ‘God’s creations’ and Year 3’s stimulus for our art work was plants.

We discussed what we actually mean by plants and we examined images of lots of plants from all over the world, making observations and coming up with different ways of describing the plants. Our idea was to create circles of plants with everyone contributing their own perception of plants so we could celebrate Year 3’s different perceptions of plants. Each pupil would create their own circle of plants and then submit one quarter segment for the whole class work of art. Each quarter would be fitted together like a jigsaw creating several ‘circles of plants’.

We started our preparations by sharing every book about or featuring plants we could find from the school library. This way we could flick through the books and find the images that fit our own perception of plants. Our perception could be the plants that look obscure, exotic or familiar. Our choices could be out of interest or because we find certain plants to be particularly beautiful. If we couldn’t find images that fit our perception in the books, we could use the iPad to search images. We even had real-life plants and leaves of plants found outside school and brought in by the adults and several pupils to help inspire our ideas.

Once we had drawn sketches of the plants, we used acrylic paint to reimagine the plants. We didn’t have to use the same colours as the reality and we thought about the emotions different colours express (e.g. red for anger and passion, blue for tranquillity etc.). There has been some fantastic works of art created and when they are all put together, they will form a wonderful expression of plant-life that make up our world. Thank you to Miss McCarry for organising art week and to Ms Cimmino for help organising the resources and we can’t wait for it all to be pieced together so we can see the end product!
